Since he has already made the blade will this cause him problems or will we have to restart a new blade? NO, a strong tip can be as much as 2.5mm depending on how much thickness is behind it. I don't think it's a big factor with today's factory made monosteels. Even if the tip winds up being thin, his work is so good it should be strong.

Remember that the steel from this period was full of impurities. These swords were likely made with meaty tips because they weren't glorified sidearms. These were used ALL THE TIME, so they would have to take a lot of abuse.

I messaged him about the distal taper anyways and we will see when he sees it tonight and I talk with him.

Sometimes I think we ought to ask ourselves with these replicas, if I were to offer this gladius to a Roman soldier, what would his response be? I think he'd say, "Nice steel!" and then take it from you.

Still I think it would be awesome to get a photo of all of our stuff together if we have stuff with him at the same time. The SBG family photo. Would be heartwarming to see. I still need to take photos of my fantasy piece that arrived a few weeks ago. I'm rather behind on that. Now that it has been in the frozen tundra of Buffalo, NY for a couple weeks, the hardwood grip scales shrunk! I'm getting a humidifier for my room and I'm going to coat it in oil and see what happens. All the brass pins are bulging as a consequence.

Yeah, I am considering something like this. The only trouble with exotic hardwoods is they are hydrophobic due to their high content of oil. The air is VERY dry in Buffalo, so a room humidifier and something like mineral oil should help.

We should start a Purna Appreciation Society thread, wherein we discuss our dealings with the great man. No, we shouldn't wear him out physically, but I get the feeling he's a total nerd about sword-making and loves what he does. So he can't really be worn out mentally.

Oh yes ! The GGK Purna Darnal's Works Appreciation Society ! Just hope we are not overworking him too much... I understand what you are saying but on the contrary I think we are providing him with a ton of attention and business that he may not have had before. It's a double-edged sword so to speak. I agree, I think he is really happy indeed, even if a bit tired. I was just noting how much custom projects we were giving him lately. And yes, he is totally a sword-nerd as us too. He really likes searching for new designs and trying new things and takes great pride in his craft (as he should).

Definitely coming along. Looks like a pompeii variety. Yes it is a pompeii style blade, which happens to be my favorite of the blade styles.

I have all the confidence in the world that he can fabricate a terrific blade. The fittings and the scabbard is what I am waiting for.

I gave him lots of info & pictures for the hilt, pommel and guard, I'm interested in how he does with that as well, he assured me with what I gave him he would have no problems. We shall see, I don't think i've been excited for a sword this much in a long time.

In fairness, the skills needed to make authentic hilt parts for these is not much. I think the proportions are more important. He had the right measurements. The grip length was short, which is correct, because you want your hand locked in place.
