One of the most prolific and widely available product, the Cold Steel Italian Longsword has received a lot of criticism over the years. By purchasing this sword, I was fully aware of these alleged potential issues about it that you can find anywhere on the Internet, but willing to giving it a shot with a critical eye, given its a quite affordable reproduction of a relatively rare type of longsword.
After carefully inspecting the sword and putting it to its pace, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of heat treatment of the blade, its fit and finish as well as the faithfulness to the historical counterparts. None of the issues is present on this sword: no loose guard and pommel, no secondary bevel or poor edge sharpness, no overly flexible blade, no rippling on the blade surface, no damage or warping or blemish on the blade or the fittings or the scabbard at all. The balance is good, the distal taper is there, the blade is razor sharp and pointy, and the designs of both the blade and hilt components can all be traced back to some historical precedents. All the detailed statistics are laid out in the video. At $270, with guaranteed return or replacement granted by a reputable retailer, what's not to like?
I also discussed the common issues cited by people on the Internet about Cold Steel as a company as well as the products they market and sell. I provided my past experience with their products and the caveats about such discussions. It goes without saying that, for most swords in this price range, made and sold by anyone, should go through some scrutiny with a degree of caution. Buyers are expected to do their homework and be prepared for some issues related to quality controls. Perhaps I am lucky this time, alas, I am reviewing this particular sword made in May 2020, not every single one they are selling or have sold. I can definitely recommend the Italian Longsword if the current iteration's quality is consistent.
I used footage from the video game my wife and I are currently developing - Fortune Favours the Bold, to demonstrate a number of weapons related to the Oakeshott Type XVa longsword in this video. I am the owner of the intellectual property of Fortune Favours the Bold and the footage showcasing it.
