I bought this sword a couple months ago. When it arrived, it had a good amount of grease on it. I cleaned it up and applied a thin layer of mineral oil, and have kept it in the wood scabbard since. I live near a dry desert - we don't get much humidity. When I pulled the sword out today, I saw a lot of marks on the sword that certainly weren't there when I got it. I rubbed it down with rubbing alcohol to clean off any residue from the scabbard, and this is what I see now.

Some of that looks as if the blade is coated with lacquer and the rubbing alcohol removed some of the lacquer, exposing unfinished metal. Other photos definitely show dark spots... I presume they don't rub off? Inside of scabbard isn't painted?

Here's the best pictures I could get of the inside of the scabbard. As far as I could tell, nothing rubbed off with the alcohol.

Try using windex to clean it. Then polish. I agree, it looks like a mix of a little rust, and some kind of varnish/lacquer coming off. Do a serious cleaning first...
