Fun With Edward, Vol 1
This is a sword made only in ~2006, for a very brief period of time. It is functional and highly ornamented, and was just too much work to justify the price point. It remains only one of two accurate production replicas of Edward III's sword that I'm aware of.
There are two main problems with this sword: the soft wood grip, and the hollow pommel, which makes for a 7" point of balance.
Since I am unable to restrain myself, I removed the opaque yet mysterious jadeite (?) crystal with a sharp object and a hammer.
Added 4oz of melted lead into the hollow pommel as ShooterMike did in 2007. I did some preliminary testing to ensure I would not overheat the enamel by doing this. Then I added some epoxy over the top to smooth it out and hold any slag that might potentially break off later on.
Painted gold. Now we're looking like a "reliquary".
Added a snippet of Edward the Confessor's underpants that I found in the garage. Really.
Finished with a semi-transparent quartz disc. The original sword's crystal was tarnished or "fogged up" by years of offgassing/oxidation/condensation. I figure originally the disc was somewhat clear, like this. I also have an aquamarine one that I might switch out for.
Anyways, it went from 3lb 1oz to 3lb 5oz all up, and moved point of balance becomes a manageable 5". It's a hell of a lot more user-friendly now, and still several ounces lighter than the A&A version.
Really the only shortcoming of this model is the soft, cheap wood used for the grip, which is just too bad, considering all the effort that was put into its manufacture. Any amount of dry handling and you see impressions on the grip, and also the guard gets loose. While fishing line or a glue shot will and has already taken care of that problem, I may do a regrip in the future with some hardwood and carefully cut the bezels at the sides and inlay them into the wood for a real solid grip.
PS - If anyone knows of any colored photos for the original of this sword, I would really appreciate it if you could drop me a line! All I have are the ones in "Records".
