I always thought razor's dulled because my beard hairs were much tougher than the steel in the razor.

I knew a fellow years back that reminded me of a hairy ape. He was short, about 5'6", barrel chested with a stomach to match, and heavy thick hair all over his body. And he had problems getting a girl, they were totally turned off. We were good friends and I watched him shave once. Back then the SOP was with a Gillette razor using a double edge blade of carbon steel was used. Hence the expression of cutting someone’s balls out with a rusty razor blade, something I hadn’t heard in a long time. Getting back to the story. It took him two blades to do the job and it had to be done twice a day. I examined a blade after he finish and it was saw toothed to the extreme, about like pushing it over 80 grit paper several times. I’ve never seen anything close to it.
I use mostly a Gillette plastic throwaway and with a replaceable cartridge when I can find one. And I’ve found that I can extend the life of those simply by cleaning with an old tooth brush. Skin, hair, and soap sometimes stick between the blades causing a further build up if not removed. My other razor is a straight one that needs stropping. But in the mornings when not fully awake and in a hurry for safety reasons I use the Gillette.
