Modern Chinese-made sword. I hesitate to say "fake" since it doesn't really look like a gunto at all. A good starting point is to look at photos of the real thing. A good resource: ohmura-study.net/900.html

Hmm thats a bummer for him, so I wonder if they put a newer Chinese blade in a old scabbard? One odd thing that I noticed was that there was a broken latch for the sword in the saya, but if you look at the tsuba there isn't any hole for the spring latch to come through.

One odd thing that I noticed was that there was a broken latch for the sword in the saya, but if you look at the tsuba there isn't any hole for the spring latch to come through. Odd. Maybe they put it together out of mis-matched bits.

My Chinese-made “gunto inspired” katana doesn’t even pretend to be a decent copy of a true gunto. It’s basically just a pretty decent Longquan katana with cast gunto-style fittings.
The fittings kinda look like copies of copies. The tsuba and koiguchi have the cutouts for a latching mechanism, but no provision at all for an actual latch.
My guess is your friend’s sword was simply “customized” with that style of fittings. fwiw

I would say to keep the fittings and get a new blade and send it off to be mounted. I have a sword with what looks like the same fittings, and they are decent reproductions. But the blade and the scabbard and handle don't look very good IMO.
