Let me preface this I have nothing against Chris Palmer. He treated me with a lot of respect and good customer service throughout. His customer service is unmatched. However, the product I received honestly was terrible. I ordered two blades from him. One was a stormbringer knife and the other was the sword of Arwen. First and foremost, upon arrival the swords are covered in what looks like a black residue that when shown under the light is rust. I had to sand that sword with 220 grit sandpaper for hours just to get a good shine on it. The sword of Arwen was big and heavy and not well balanced but that was not an issue. I just wanted a heavy beater sword I could chop stuff with then hang it back on my wall because I love Lord of the Rings. The swords on his website are advertised as being nearly indestructible and that simply is not the case in my instance. I took my blade out to swing it against a wooden pallet in my yard. Realized two or maybe three swings in that just from chopping, my blade developed a very noticeable bend. (Below I will attach photos to show). The blade also took a chip very easily. I know the chip is easily fixable but I was shocked wood did that. I sent him photos and mailed it back to him. He told me something went wrong in the heat treat and the blade was too soft. About two weeks later I get my sword back and its awful, the blade is bent all out of shape and covered in that rust again. A massive and severe bend had developed and the blade was easily moved back and forth with ease. It was as if there was no heat treat at all. I could take the blade and bend it out of place with just my hands. It was incredibly soft and just overall not a "nearly indestructible" blade whatsoever. Along with that, the wood around where the pins were placed was cracked and chipping off. Overall I will not be ordering from Chris again. Below is the slight bend that developed when I chopped wood Attachments:

Did he explain why he sent you back a softer blade then what you started with ? Why didn’t he check the temper or send you a new replacement?

I'm set to receive something from him shortly. This makes me a little nervous. I'm sorry this happened to you. For what it's worth, a bend is preferable to a break.

After the lie ridden review video they made with J. Woodward (that was subject to a purge across fb) I don't trust them much.

A link to the video you're referring to (or at least a summary of its content, if it's not viewable anywhere) and some specific examples of what you think they lied about would be very helpful.

Well MOK, like I said, it got purged when Woodward deleted all the threads, they were on his posts... basically he reviewed a sword in the usual manner, but it took a lot of damage, which he lied about, repaired before showing the piece off and said it never took any damage when it was very very clear in the videos. A lot of more well respected than I makers chimed in, showed a lot of very clear evidence from the video that it took heavy damage like nicks etc, chunks of blade missing, and it got deleted.

Did he explain why he sent you back a softer blade then what you started with ? Why didn’t he check the temper or send you a new replacement? He said he re-heat treated it and it must have bent in shipment. He might have done that but something clearly must have gone wrong twice now in order for it to be so soft that it bends with just the strength of my arms. And I am no body builder, trust me.

If its a sword, honestly good luck. If its a knife, maybe its okay. I am beginning to wonder if his heat treat just makes the swords way too brittle. My stormbringer knife is fine, wont bend and is able to chop wood fine. Maybe his axes are good too? I don't know, I just do not trust his work anymore. Even the grip was less than adequate. I understand its a below 500 dollar piece, but can you at least make sure the grip is fully attached?

Does he use a coal forge or a modern propane forge and is it thermo cycled or just oil quenched. I know the steel is just cut from stock sheet and grinded to the design. Just curious how he does his tempering.

A bad temper and bad grip even for a 100 dollar sword is way too much to allow to be sent out.

Just curious how he does his tempering. He says how he does it on his website. Heats the steel to 1500, quenches in oil, then to 500, air cools it. If you read on the SBG website, it says a common problem from this company are warped and bent blades. I should have known, I just do not understand why SBG endorses them and has exclusive lines.

Very good Question I would recommend trying a custom lord of the rings sword from ryansword They have great customer service and Fred Chen will work with you to build something unique and personal and also very well built. Having a number of swords made from them I stand by my recommendation for them. Yes there always is that one bad batch but that’s going to happen it’s how a vendor handles it is what matters

I have never quite understood SBG's apparent affiliation with this company.

With recent issues arising involving Scorpion Knives and Swords and their tempering issue, thought it might be helpful for people to see this post again. I hope they do something to rectify the blade issues because I think what they do is a neat concept and if they could execute the heat treat successfully I would buy from them again.
