The Symbol Remains, their first new album in almost two decades, is out now. Exciting! You can have a listen at e.g. Spotify or Youtube. I've only heard through it once - I won't say listened, as I was concentrating on something else most of the time - but I'm pretty okay with it. Like I said on another forum: it's not Imaginos, but then only Imaginos ever was so that's not saying much. A few tracks fall flat for me, and on several they're really feeling their age, especially in Eric's vocal range. "Edge of the World" in particular feels like outright easy listening dad rock, to me... But most of it is alright, though! "Tainted Blood" and "Nightmare Epiphany" are good, and "Secret Road" with its smooth flowing guitars, but what really grabbed me was "The Alchemist"; I think that's the standout piece, here, a straight up adaptation of an early Lovecraft short story of the same title that feels like a real return to classic BÖC form in theme and execution. More attentive listening may change my mind, but right now I'm happy!

At first I thought this was a prank because they haven't released an album in like 20 years.

I really enjoyed 2001's Curse of the Hidden Mirror and had resigned myself to that being their last album. I hope that this is at least that good.

If a long time band releases an album and you only get a few good tuns than that's still alright and on par with most bands album output. Just plain unrealistic to expect an all killer no filler chalk full of classics (rarer than hens teeth) when most of the great bands have an early five to seven year window (Beatles, Zep, AC/DC, Sabbath, etc...) of creative energy. Next month: AC/DC, and you WILL NOT see 1975-80 (six albums in five years) TNT, Dirty Deeds, Let There Be Rock, Power Age, Highway To Hell, Back In Black level quality. However, you will get a few new tunes that make you tap your toes and flip old father time (and Covid, for that matter) the bird.
