Hey y'all- just an FYI for those of you -if any- who are in need or want of a Black Wind Katana- at the time of writing there are three of these NIB w/ minor cosmetic blemishes on eBay- stores.ebay.com/Ridge-Knife-Shop-and-Outfitter_W0QQ_trksid=p1638.m118.l1247for $69.99 each ! I just bought one- shipping ran about $10.00 (to Eastern U.S.)- I'd been looking for one for some time- they are about impossible to find. The same eBay store also has the Wakizashis for about $64.00- too bad I already have one! Anyway, thought I'd put the word out- d PS- Actually it looks like there are 5 katanas and 5 wakizashis available at the moment.

You're welcome, sir. I'm aware that not everyone is an eBay junkie like myself so I thought there might be somebody out there who might want this info. Personally I like these swords very much- they are the epitome of function over form- nothing elegant about them- but they are virtually indestructible and scary-sharp. And they are a piece of American cutlery history really. It was a sad, sad day when Ontario closed their doors. The cutlery company I mean. The Canadian province of the same name is still open I believe.- d

Hehe. I have had an Ontario machete for YEARS, it's the most solid blade I have ever seen.

Big knife, rather get a real Katana for that price.

Thought I'd put in a good word for these. I've owned one since the review for it came out on this very site The epoxy coating holds up surprisingly well and the blade is quite resilient. A friend smacked it into a tile on a missed swing and all that resulted was a little dulling and one cracked tile. Only thing is the paracord grip is a tad on the thin side, but it looks like there are drilled holes in the tang that the paracord is threaded through, so you could conceivably make it into a fun tactical-style project blade. Yeah, not a real katana but pretty dang fun.

Well........as far as comparing the Black Wind blades with "real" katanas.....it's apples and oranges. You can get a $70 katana or a $700 katana and neither will have the kind of brutal durability the Black Winds possess. And the Black Winds will never have the grace and elegance even an inexpensive "real" katana has. Yes, they are big knives, but so are most swords.
The grips do leave a bit to be desired to say the least. I've certainly heard of folks customizing them. I think a set of Ironwood or Osage Orange scales would be a fine addition- durable and a bit more aesthetically pleasing. But I already have enough pretty swords- probably just wrap up the handle with skateboard tape if anything.
