The problem with this kind of style is that it requires the other person to perform specific movements for it all to work. It's choreography based on what used to be fighting skills. I doubt it would stand up to open sparring an opponent from another school or style
I rather like it, all things considered. It's a lot more functional and history based than your run of the mall McDojo styles.

Hema and eskrima/Kali (I never bothered to ask if there's a difference between the two I just realized) are my favourite things right now. I like a lot of the movements it trains your body to do as a reaction. Someone asked me if martial arts can make you into a good fighter. I said it can make you into a better fighter. But then again, technically could most things, even just walking more

Sparring makes you a better fighter because it trains you how to be hit and to hit other people. As Bruce Lee famously said: "brick don't hit back".
Until you spar, it's all theoretical.

I've sparred before. I just lack the practice these days. So the best I can do is train muscle memory till next time I can spar. But to be fair, sparring IS theoretical too. So it's not exactly the pinnacle of it either *edit* but I should mention I do agree that it's the best we got right now. Would be neat if it could be pain based instead of point based, quit when it's too sore. But at the same time I could see too much going on with that lol. *edit 2* Also what I do isn't intended to train me for sparring or versing another person. It's just to gain muscle memory, strength and endurance. Pretty much all I can do in quarantine unless I can find myself a sparring partner. You would be surprised how little bit people are into that where I'm from

It's always a challenge to find a sparring partner, and then it's another challenge not to get to used to them. Variety of partners and a variety of styles is the way to go.
As far as the rules are concerned, that is dependent on what is agreed to and the amount of protective gear available. In the end, it's still a simulation of fighting, but it's the closest thing you can do apart from actual fighting with random strangers and it's damn better than nothing at all. At worst, it will build confidence and strength. Those attributes are 90% of winning a real street fight.

Yea that's definitely true. I used tk have about two or three sparring partners when I first started (before I started being taught martial arts). Eventually got too used to sparring them, and one of us would usually reach a peak lol. In full contact sparring, you learn what works and what doesn't work pretty fast I find.

This is tenshin ryu. A contemporary school that pretends to be old, and is made up of film-like fancy choreography. Actual battojutsu/kenjutsu is much less flaire-y and much more sensible. For example, katori shinto ryu, an actual old system-

I think "fancy choreography" sums it up well. 🙁

It's anime reenactment? I guess it's better than lightsabers but not my cup of tea.
