Hello all! I have my first knife etched so I can see the hamon, and it didn't quite go as planned, go figure right? lol 1075 quenched in parks 50, a hira zukuri japanese style tanto just over 11.5 inches in blade length. All in all, I'm very happy with it, and I'm tempted to polish it out as is, because my only gripe with it is purely cosmetic it seems. This is literally the first thing I have ever forged. No nails, or leafs for practice, figured I'd jump right into it; First lump of 1075 steel that I brought out and started banging on :) Bought all the equipment I needed slowly, watched well over 1000 hours of videos over a year or more of research, often re-watched them in fact. I work with Japanese blades as a small business making new saya, tsuka, etc, so i get many wonderful examples of new custom blades as well as nihonto in my shop all the time for reference. Etch revealed I didnt quite get the look I wanted though. For some reason I remember ordering satanite to use as clay for it, but only had rutlands on hand... So i cured and let it dry fully, then baked it at 350 for an hour to get all moister out. (Pretty sure thats where I went wrong.) Either way I figure I would do a quick show and tell before I lightly sand, re-normalize, and re-clay with satanite when it comes in :) Also need to refine the shape of the nakago and take out some of the sori in there, as well as refine the mune, but I'll leave that until after the next heat treat. Hope to share a lot more with everyone over the next few months! Would love and appreciate constructive criticism or comments! Warmly, Sal' of Jizamurai Customs

I don’t know much about forging but if that’s your first try I’d say your doing pretty damn well. Looks like a tanto so success there. 🙂 Looking forward to updates.

Looks GOOD!! Well done!!!! Leave the hamon alone, finish it, and mount it. Retreating is opening Pandora's box. Just make another one.
