Greetings.
I'm thinking about crafting a leather sleeve to cover my sword's ricasso, like: This. I'm assuming it's not quite as simple as making the thing then slipping it on, could anyone enlighten me?

My sidesword ricasso leather cover has a seam. And slipping over parrying hooks of greatswords doesn't seem possible.

Yea don't do leather on steel. Its bad for the blade and doesn't really add much in regards to it purpose of being a demi-scabbard. Here's a link to my claymore re-wrap and demi-scabbard build. If you have any more questions about build and or construction let me know and I'd be happy to guide you through it! sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/45581/windlass-heros-warsword-demi-scabbardAlso what sword are you planning on doing a demi-scabbard for?

Also what sword are you planning on doing a demi-scabbard for? Ty my dude.
The sword is this one, the Windlass German Bastard Sword.
Getting that kind of wood will be easy enough but I think I'll need a fine saw or something for the more precise cutting I'll have to do. Is there any special trick to making the thing fit snuggly?

Bandsaw or jigsaw would be fine in regards to small saws. The majority of the work can be done with a sander or by hand with papers and a block. As far as fitting snug, basically keeping your measurements exact to where rhe central ridge friction fits the blade itself. On piece of advice, aside from look cool there's really no need for a demi-scabbard on the Windlass German Bastard. Its blade is way too short for a demi-scabbard. If all you want is the look and not the function of one, then work around the measurements of your leather scabbard and try to keep the demi-scabbard the same length as the throat collar. Any other questions feel free ask!

Hah, the look was pretty much what I was after. I was going to eventually make a new/modified scabbard with some engravings on the leather once I get reasonably decent at that, that's a little ways off though.
Many thanks~

I have that sword and find it a good one. A leather, wood core scabbard would be a nice improvement. One thing I suggest is if you want a good snug fit be careful as wood will expand and contract depending on the humidity. I see this frequently as a problem with katanas by some of our members. I have a custom made sword cane by a gentleman in Africa that matched the scabbard and blade exactly. A precision fit if there ever was one. It was a joy to draw and return the blade. One day after time the sword was most reluctant to leave the scabbard due to our humidity. After correcting, the problem occurred twice more. I would suggest initially to give it a slightly loose fit and then in time come back and shim it if necessary. I sliver of wood or felt will do it. I’ve used bamboo.

Yea don't do leather on steel. Its bad for the blade Huh? Why? Every single BKS sword and the swords of a lot of polish, czech and chinese makers/vendors will take damage from the leather wrap? Please give more info on this issue... we have some BKS swords and several others with this wrap type; directly to tang, i mean. We wont like damaged sword tangs!

Simple, my friend. Use that segment OF your Windlass scabbard. You'll have to shorten your scabbard anyway, right? Plus that section of the scabbard already fits the lower ("ricasso") section of the blade anyway, right? Just remove the metal throat piece, cut or saw through the existing scabbard at the level you want to do the "ricasso" wrap, and use an adhesive (silicone if you don't care about being period, something like pitch if you do) to give it enough friction to stay in place on that part of the blade. Voila. You have a wrapped section, and still have a scabbard that fits up TO the wrapped section. (And I won't even reveal that I've occasionally done exactly this to a Windlass piece or three, going back as far as 25 years. ;) )

Well the tangs dont really matter as much. The leather isn't going to do much outside discolor or maybe rust up the tang. Again not something harsh to a tang but to a polished and shaped blade, well thats another thing. Especially if you ever plan to remove it. That's one of the reasons I never purchased a Braveheart replica as all models glue leather to the riccasso rather than make a proper demi-scabbard. The only manufacturer that does make proper demi-scabbards is Albion for their Tyrolean sword.
