I have seen a lot of engraved swords from the 1700-1800s. But normally these engravings are characterized by looking like thin line-drawings on the blade. But then I see this on a French model 1767 grenadier saber: I have never seen this kind of engraving on this old a sword. So I am asking, does this “Vive la Nation” look authentic? Is it something that could/would have been made on a simple infantry/grenadier-soldier’s saber during/after the revolution? Or is this a to plain sword for this fine(expensive?) engraving. I do not dispute that there is potentially a million reasons for a sword owning person of the time to want to engrave this onto his sword, but I am really wondering about the technology used and the ability to do this kind of a good looking engraving, especially when other engravings I see are made in a totally different style. Is this genuine engravings? PS: Vive la Nation seems to be an early revolutionary slogan, before people all shouted "Vive la révolution":

Welcome aboard! It looks like you've copy-pasted the URL of the Dropbox preview page, rather than the image file itself, so the image isn't showing up. I'm not sure that Dropbox actually allows embedding files on another site, either, AIUI they're exclusively a link sharing host (though I might be wrong about that, having never used them myself), so you'd have to post a shared link to the picture rather than the picture itself: help.dropbox.com/files-folders/share/view-only-access#link

WARNING! The Antiques Storehouse = ScammersUnfortunately it is a scam. Sadly it seems like this is a genuine old saber (maybe / maybe not French, but still of the time period) that has been mutilated in an effort to make it more interesting and get the saber sold. Maybe the seller could not sell the saber and thought he should just add a little bit of extra history to get it sold. If I was a UK residence I would call the police, but I am not. If the firm has a “license” to store and sell swords and blades, then they should get it revoked, besides being officially prosecuted by the police for selling forgery. I guess The Antiques Storehouse could claim that they have had the sword, sold it to a private person, then got it back (not knowing it was the same sword), and then listing it again. I think this is unlikely. A dealer specializing in military antiques would remember, identify and evaluate the relisted item. But I guess other people could still give them the benefit of the doubt. I don’t and will report them to both Ebay and Gunstar. --------------------------- Here is my evidence that indicates that the following firm/seller is a scammer. They are seemingly willing to ruin a genuine antique, altering it to raise the attractiveness, trying to scam a potential buyer by selling something that is not what it seems: The seller:www.antiques-storehouse.co.uk/index.htmlwww.gunstar.co.uk/view-trader/antiques-storehouse/1018www.ebay.co.uk/str/antiquesstorehouseStorehouse 9 Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Portsmouth PO1 3PX The first "American" version:www.gunstar.co.uk/american-revolutionary-war-french-m1767-grenadier-hanger-oth/Blades/808048The second "French" version:www.gunstar.co.uk/french-1767-pattern-briquet-infantry-sabre-swords/Blades/1057081Just for safe keepings of the original and later listing:web.archive.org/web/20200718141105/https://www.gunstar.co.uk/american-revolutionary-war-french-m1767-grenadier-hanger-oth/Blades/808048web.archive.org/web/20200718141158/https://www.gunstar.co.uk/french-1767-pattern-briquet-infantry-sabre-swords/Blades/1057081Comparison 1:ibb.co/ZfWWqFFibb.co/HHKBCbCComparison 2:ibb.co/gRLYG27ibb.co/7WzM8ktComparison 3:ibb.co/TmqjQX2ibb.co/Y8rHSYKComparison 4 - BEFORE AND AFTER!!!!:ibb.co/ZJxcCDKibb.co/BN9PvyMComparison 5:ibb.co/L5CqScMibb.co/zNF4V6R
