Hello fellow sword enthusiasts. I wonder is anyone here has a very in-depth knowledge of the French model 1833 navy cutlass and its production history? I am thinking of buying one of these, but as the one I got in reach seems kind of odd/special, I don’t really know if it is a good purchase or not. I haven’t got loads of money, so I don’t want to do a bad deal. After researching a bit, it seems that most model 1833 for sale on the www and auctions are produced in the 1840s, either from Klingenthal and Chatellerault. Very few examples of other swordmakers and very few swords made in the 1830s. Some information on the www states that the first M1833 was produced in 1935, regardless of the model name 1833. The 1833 cutlass I can buy seems to be from 1835 and is not marked Klingenthal or Chatellerault. It is marked “MANCEAUSE ’A PARIS 1835” on the blade. I have only been able to find 1 single cutlass like this on the internet (from 1836), but no pictures of that blade and its manufacturing mark: catalogs.marinersmuseum.org/object/CL2676Here are pictures of the one I have a chance to buy … it seems in good and decent condition: Can anyone help bring a bit more information to the table about this early production model? Is this a fake? Is it a rare find from a tiny early manufacturer in Paris? Was Klingenthal and Chatellerault even making 1833s at this early? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!
