So I have been trying to sympathetically clean up my first antique saber and am mostly happy, but have two outstanding issues I’m hopeful for some advice on: First, these black spots on the brass guard are persistent. Brasso with cloths and brass brushes dont get rid of it, but seem to dim them somewhat until wiped off, then appear back: Second, the blade itself has some black spots and features on it that I havent been able to easily remove with FLITZ metal polish on cloth or very fine steel wool. I also tried a cotton buffing wheel on a power drill to little effect: Any thoughts or recommendations would be much appreciated.

Forget buffing wheels and power tools. Go through Uhlan’s old posts as he is a master at restoration.

That hilt looks steel. I would contact a jeweler and ask them to plug the proof stamp hole. Will be a dangerous part if rust decides to live there.
