Hi. I've been lurking for a while and figured now was a good time to ask some questions. I'm not hugely experienced with modern production katanas. I've been reading a lot and studying and, of course, am as confused as when I began. In short, I am looking for a katana as both a nice display piece with a good blade and for the occasional backyard cutting. I would like to have a nice-looking/kind of unique Hamon, good quality, functional, etc.
Disclosure: I haven't trained yet, have not joined a dojo nor have I attempted to cut anything with swords. I do enjoy their aesthetics, but I eventually would like to cut with any swords I may own, so functionality is key. My intentions for future cutting exercises will be soft targets, more or less targets katana are designed to cut, such as mats, etc. The price range I am interested in is not going below $400 and don't want to go much above $900.
To be simple and concise; I currently have 3 in mind, Ronin elite, Hanwei bamboo mat, and something from St. nihonto. I am still open to other brand suggestions. One thing I have heard is the Hanwei's tsukas are subpar. I am still fairly new to the world of swords (as you might be able to tell), so go easy on me. Feel free to ask if anything needs to be specified, I'll reply as soon as I can.
Thanks in advance!

Matthew Jensen has a decent video discussing some recommendations that might help you with your decision. His channel has probably the broadest range of swords reviewed I've found so far. I hope some of it's useful to you.
