Both are French Navy Officers sabres. Not for parade. At least not in the past. Navy Infantry Officer sabres/swords can be even more ornate. Ivory grips and such. Navy sabres were very ornate as the French reasoned that the Navy often made first contact with foreign states, tribes, whatever and this would convey a good impression of the French being very superior beings and not good for eating. Something along those lines. Most later Navy sabres are of the M1837 (?), I am not sure of the date here, variant. There are many differend designs. Almost every political change resulted in another artistic effort. Also Officers had their own take on the regulation designs of the moment. It can be quite a challenge to sort these Navy sabres out as to period. Try to get l'Hoste :: Les Sabres. Not expensive and a must have aid for sorting out French stuff.
Cheers.
