I love the look/functionality of scale armor but dont care for the drawbacks. Im wondering if it would be feasible to mount the scales onto a quality mail hauberk? Anyone ever tried it?

I would definitely be concerned about the weight. That would essentially be two layers of steel.
Have you considered lamellar or brigandine style armors? The are essentially overlapping metal scales well secured to a backing material (textile or leather).

Also you can attach the scales to anything durable, leather, canvas etc. Scale of mail is...HEAVY and binds in ways you won't expect.

If you just want a costume piece, think painted guitar picks. Easy to paint, drill a hole in the pointed end and sew onto fabric or leather.

I hope that you are as strong as an ox and have endurance in order to carry that weight around. If the fight is over the hill would you be able to make it? No, I haven't tried it but know the weight of my metal armour and I don't care to make it heavier.
