Hi All, I have been offered a victorian prison officers cutlass with an etched blade. The name of the prison is also etched on the blade. Everything looks good and original on the cutlass but i just thought that a prison officer would be issued a bog standard cutlass. Etching the name of the prison on the blade seems a little ott..... Any thoughts welcomed.....
Steve.

Don't know about prison issue, but I see many English Victorian police cutlasses that were engraved for the constabulary force they were issued to. Certainly not all, but enough that it's not unusual.

By prison officer, do you mean warder or guard? Prison warders' cutlasses were kept in stores (armouries) until needed, whereas batons would be more likely to be carried on a regular basis. Most of the prison warders' swords I have seen at etched to Chatham Prison. I am looking forward to seeing your sword!

Hi V/S. It was a warders cutlass. It was in an auction and unfortunately it went way beyond my budget. Someone got a very nice piece of history....

Sorry you didn't get it. I'm still trying to catch a nice police cutlass at auction, before the greedy dealers get it and multiply the price they paid by four.

Hi All, Anyone interested in buying a Prison Warder's Victorian Bayonet/Cutlass issued at Wormwood Scrubs Prison London. I purchased this some time ago from a Pawn Shop in New York. The Sword is Etched Wormwood Scrubs Prison on one side and on the reverse Parker Field & Sons Holborn The Prison Service Museum in Rugby does not have an example of this sword but has several similar ones inscribed Holloway Prison
