One of my favorite pieces I have ever owned, from one of my favorite fabricators, came with an unusual 'feature'...there is a small stain, black in color, with texture, and about 1cm x 1cm that I have tried removing and sealing over and over again, but it keeps coming back. I have sanded it off with high grit, with flitz, than sealed the area with renaissance wax, with WD40, whatever, and it always returns in around 2 weeks. The stain itself reaches to the edge. It always comes back EXACTLY the same- same dimensions exactly. The rest of the blade does not stain. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? The only thing I can think of is that the maker used it to behead a (deceased) wild boar prior to sending it to me; it has crossed my mind some sort of boar gunk may have reacted with the steel and created a chemical phenomenon on the surface...
any thoughts?

It's haunted.
Couldn't really say anything more specific than that without further information, but seeing a photo might help tell what's going on.

Some Windlass swords have returning black spot areas near the guard which obviously has something to do with the inlay of the sheath/scabbard.

You are vague about the spot. I have several swords by Windlass with this problem and contribute it to the material that they put in the sheath near the throat to dampen movement and to better secure the sword. I have not found a solution. Perhaps cutting those out and replacing with felt. I have had them work lose and needed regluing. In my cases the spot turns to black rust with help and is no problem other than an eye sore. I have one case that it did not turn to dormant black rust but continued to grow and could be felt although black in colour. None of my usual methods worked so finally I took clear finger nail polish and painted over after cleaning. That worked and to my surprise can’t be seen, the finger nail polish that is. On the other hand, perhaps there is an evil spirit trapped in the sword trying to come out.

I thought the same of the scabbard and checked that while back. I knew there wasn't any liner but thought perhaps there was some material somewhere on the inside, but the inside is clean, plain wood. The maker thought it was pretty odd too and made the same joke you guys made (well in your cases I am not so sure it was a joke) I have no issue posting a photo but honestly it just looks like black rust...there really isn't anything special about the appearance. Whatever, I will just keep cleaning it every couple of weeks...carefully

I recommend comprehensive investigative experimentation.
