...not to pull out in case of a home invasion, but to hide as if it doesn't even exist!
Just for a laugh...
My brother gave me this, some time ago, after hearing that I was interested in swords. We hardly see each other; he's busy being a senior lecturer in theology and philosophy, and I'm a pagan barbarian on the other side of the country. My parents passed it on to me, with the warning from him to be careful with it because, "it's a real katana and it's really sharp". They stressed, seriously and repeatedly as if handing over a family heirloom, that it was a real sword that he had bought years ago. No irony or anything was intended from either of them. They all genuinely believed what they were saying.
Oh my word...
Yes, that's genuine polythene under the quality, glued-on nylon ito. The blade (which arrived quite bent, showing he had been swinging it around) is of course highest grade, mirror polished, mystery recipe stainless steel. Kashira and fuchi are gaudily coloured hard plastic. At least the tsuba and habaki are metal; coated pot metal I think. The whole tsuka is secured with mekugi glue. I don't think we need to dissect the plastic saya.
It wasn't sharp. Not even by spoon standards. That is fortunate, because my brother would likely have hurt himself with it otherwise (he's not the most, erm... practical of people).
I had got sort of excited when I was told they had a sword for me from him; I really should have known better, knowing my brother. While we share some traits (we both like strong, peated single malts), in most ways we could not be more different.
So, that's the sword I have to hide under the bed in shame that I own it.
The next time I went to visit my parents, I took along a few of my swords for them to have a look at. You know, real ones. The plastic katana wasn't mentioned ever again after that.

Oh man! Gotta love gift swords like these. I got one a while back that, while not functional, is a perfectly acceptable display piece. Not like this😆

Good story. Reminds me of my sister back in high school days (many, many years ago). She would buy me things she liked. Albums, etc. She later became a great gift giver when she matured some.

If it were me, I'd hang that sucker up on the wall right below a real katana so I could show off the difference to friends, family, and guests.

The funniest thing is, and this stupidity might shock those who don't live in the UK...
With the latest amendment to the Offensive Weapons Act, that plastic katana is now completely illegal. I'm going to have to dispose of it; either hand it in to the police (no chance) or destroy it.
The real, and much deadlier, things are still legal!
I'll probably shorten the stainless blade to get out of the OWA issue, and maybe try my hand at turning it into a wakizashi with a nice handle. Just for fun and to make a nice display piece.

That s-u-c-k-s. Very sorry to hear that. 🥺 I will dutifully avoid posting any political statements, respecting the forum rules. 😖

That's as may be, but it's still a katana and therefore able to cut a brick in half cleanly.
