I have been fixated on this sword for about a month now, and considering buying it: www.museumreplicas.com/the-valerias-swordas it looks similar to a Chinese sword Sifu Chang had that I always coveted. That said, I'm not so sure on the 1085 steel, cannot tell if it has full tang, and the fact it is a movie reproduction has me cautious. Anyone here have experience with this sword, or know any details about it? Is it just decorative, or is it functional...as in tameshigiri functional?

I've held one briefly. The balance is good, the blade is nice, but I'm 90% sure it has a rat tail tang. Though I've never seen one disassembled.

Have you thought about picking up the phone and calling the vendor? You might be surprised what talking to the people that either sell it or make it can tell you about it.

No rat-tail tang, but hollow wood pipe grip with no contact of tang to the wood... at least on our piece. Similar to the Windlass Atlantean (metal tube). Fill up the grip with a good epoxy, glue the grip and everything should be fine for at least light cutting.

I'd think for the asking price it should need no modifications, and "light cutting" is really not what I'm looking for. Anyway, I appreciate you saving me the money and disappointment. Thanks again.

If you want something fantasy-ish, look for a Windlass Raptor. Thats a great sword...just saying.

Isn't that evenly round grip a problem for the edge alignment?

Isn't that evenly round grip a problem for the edge alignment? Yes, but that can be filed to fit easily... or compensate with a wrap.
