Is it unit marked? That will normally be at the top of the guard in line with the grip. Mine is marked 7 R.D.1.83 = 7th Reserve Dragoon Regiment, 1 Squadron, Sword # 83
Look on top of the blade near the guard and you will see a Crown W with a year date. Mine is marked Crown W98. Made in 1898.
Enjoy. Looks good. Scabbards are as scarce as hen's teeth.

It is not the year of manufacture, but the year of military fiscal acceptance. The weapon itself could very well have been made the year earlier. "hen's teeth" Attachments:
