A friend asked me to sell his sword when he moved out of the country. This goes back some years, and i have done nothing for various reasons, mostly because i didn't even know where to start. I'd like to rectify that. Where can i find the resources to evaluate it, learn any laws about selling swords, and put it up for sale? It's a crusader sword he bought at a renaissance fair about 20 years ago for a little over $1000 from Ye Silver Castle with some accoutrements and a shine.

Evaluate - best hope is someone here on the forum is familiar with the maker and can tell us things like steel type and tang construction.
It's really nice looking and unique. Assuming it's built as a functional sword and not just a display piece, soneone here will probably want it. There's a classifieds section.
Unless it's an antique (it's not) or something coveted by collectors due to scarcity and popularity (could be), swords go down in value instead of up. I would say people usually get 50-75% of the original cost back reselling a sword in the classifieds here.
There are usually no laws to consider except import laws if you ship it to some countries.

Just a quick search showed me Ken of Ye Silver Castle made swords and knives, some out of D2 steel, and retired some years ago due to health concerns.
It's what we would consider a functional fantasy sword. Post it up in the classifieds. If someone wants it, they can pay you over paypal and you ship it to them. You have to post it with a price. Obviously the lower you are willing to go, the easier it will be to sell.

Wow, thank you for all that. That's a good start. I have the detail sheet as well. I ought to make an account here on Sunday and post it with all the details. Are there any laws about selling or shipping swords that i ought to know? Also, can anyone help me determine a fair price?

just look up your specific states laws for weapons, some states let you carry swords in public some dont, the price it was when you bought it times .8 is a good place to start, unless its a sword made by a really desireable smith in which case price can be the same or even go up a bit

Thank you. I see i have some research ahead of me.
Is one of the forums here appropriate for this research. That is, search, find, post, and see what others comment?

You're overthinking this. Just post it in the classifieds here for $800 and then drop the price by $20 a week until someone takes it. Which could be a while. Or put it on ebay with the best offer option.
