Hi,
I am new to this forum but recently received my great grandfather’s ceremonial Ottoman sword. He was a medical doctor in Lebanon and was conscripted into the Ottoman army as a medical doctor from 1914 to 1916 and presented with this sword. Any help on details would be much appreciated - also any recommendations for care.

That is a wonderful heirloom your granddad left you. I have no information on the sword itself to offer, but can say keep in oiled or waxed of choice and do not touch the blade bare handed. The balance of the metal appears to be well patina so less critical about touching but if possible a gloved hand would be better. The grip appears to wood without a leather wrap and to have shrunk with age. In either case, wood or leather covered, it needs oiling also. Use the appropriate oil depending on the material.
