Any theories on why knights would be portrayed as fighting snails?
Any other examples of medieval sh** posting?

I think there's another, somewhat simpler reason for the snails, too. Monks not only scribed and copied manuscripts, they also tended gardens (because food, yo). And IME the one thing every gardener will agree on is that they HAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE snails.

My son is in the collect all the animals in the yard as pets stage right now. There is a makeshift terrarium full of snails in my mud room/shop right now. I hate the damned things, but at least they’re not on my lettuce. I fully sympathize with the original artist.
Pgandy, machete hunting for them sounds like an excellent idea for this afternoon. Thanks for that.

But that appear to be a "wineyard" snail as we call them here; they dont go on your veggies like the naked ones! Dont be so cruel!

We call the naked ones slugs. The snails I have here are small. No bigger than a fingernail, and they munch plants just as badly as the slugs. I’d give a bigger one a pass as long as it left my veggies alone. 😉

I killed about 10 a couple of days ago in my garden using a machete. I am outraged. Snails are actually kinda cute. I know they can be invasive pests, but really. I much prefer the idea of placing them in a terrarium. It's like snail jail.

I am mostly being facetious. I've killed pests in my garden many times.

I killed about 10 a couple of days ago in my garden using a machete. that's hilarious. Have they been so big you felt the need to grab a shield and arming sword?

If you feel bad about killing snails, there's always the option of chucking them in the neighbor's yard.

Any theories on why knights would be portrayed as fighting snails? They're French, and that's a hunting scene?

Any other examples of medieval sh** posting? I know it is a sword forum but my cousin sent me this without context. I am feeling perplexed.

I much prefer the idea of placing them in a terrarium. It's like snail jail. I too find them cute, and fascinating. I might even add delicious. But the ones in my garden are too small to eat. By placing them in a terrarium I see one of two things happening and neither to my liking; either I become their slave maintaining them, or they die a slow death for lack of food and water. A machete is much faster. At first I left them alone finding them interesting little critters but believe they were amongst other pests making unsightly holes in leaves. If you like the next time I'll box them up and ship to you C.O.D. Give me an address.

My cats can execute them, although knowing them they will probably be cowardly and keep away.

I not happy about killing them but a machete is faster than pitching them over the wall into my neighbours’ yard. Unlike me they took the easy way out and cemented their surroundings thus avoiding the garden chores. Me, I hate an asphalt jungle.

I found this fellow today. He is in the snail family, I'm sure. His shell is different but the animal inside is similar to a snail. Occasionally I find one of their discarded shells, but smaller than this. This is the second live one I've found and the first in years. Because of their rarity I don't feel my plants threatened so after the photo I returned him to where I found him.
