I’m thinking about the kind of scabbard I want for my Arms & Armor 15th Cent. Two Hander with a mottled dark brown leather handle. I am pretty set on a scabbard resembling the one Conan used for the Atlantean sword. It’s basically a wood core scabbard wrapped in a coyote pelt secured by leather straps. Or something like what Ned Stark has for his sword Ice in the first episode of Game of Thrones: a scabbard loosely wrapped in wolf skin. I know wolf skin isn’t an option, but the idea of having a scabbard wrapped in animal pelts for this big ole sword gives me fire in the belly.
Two problems though:
1) My sword will be about twice as long as Conan’s, so a coyote pelt won’t be large enough to achieve the same result. And we already know wolf skin isn’t an option...
-Possible Solution: I think I could instead use the hide of a larger animal. Right now I can only think about a large deer (red deer, reindeer, etc.). What do y’all think?
2) How could I get a scabbard like this made? As far as I know, this is an unusual project as far as scabbards go. Should I try to make the wood core myself, then somehow attach the pelt to the wood core, also myself? Or do y’all know of any custom scabbard makers out there willing to take on a project like this?
Specs for this sword:
• Overall Length: 59.25" • Blade Length: 46.125" • Blade Width: 2.37" • Guard Width: 10.75" • Grip Length: 8.9" • Balance Point: 5.3" • Weight: 6.1 lbs
Simply put, it’s a big sword.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Why cant you use wolf pelts? Ive seen them for sale online, could always use multiple pelts together, custom scabbard maker could do it but really depends on your budget this wont be cheap, pelts alone will cost u alot

I didn't even bother to research whether wolf pelts were available because of their history as an endangered species. But yeah, looks like wolf pelts are the way to go. They are essentially a longer version of a coyote pelt. They are also a better option than something like reindeer fur because they are not quite as wide, so none of the pelt should go to waste. Budget shouldn't be a problem, as long as a custom scabbard won't cost much more than $1000. However, cost efficiency is always a good thing to think about. I think I'm going to try to make my own. This way, the only thing I'll really blow cash on would be the animal pelt. I like arts and crafts, so this project seems doable. Need to do some research though. I have worked with wood before, but never leather. How hard could it be? The end product should look similar to this: This is the DBK Conan Scabbard, made with a coyote pelt. Based on this image, I think the hardest part would be constructing the wood core. After that, wrapping the core in fur might just fall into place.

I can see it getting a bit tricky at the ends of the scabbard - making the fur nice and neat around the mouth where it has to interact with the sword, and the pointy end where it needs to come in on itself in an orderly fashion, may take some planning and practice to pull off.

with a 1k budget theres for sure some makers who can do it for u, probably u would end up spending 500 on a nice pelt and 500 on the maker using the pelt and making the scabbard itself along with assembling, probably not dbk as he is on the highest end but other makers

Alright. The sword has arrived. It’s amazing and couldn’t be happier with it.
I’ve decided to construct a wood core myself using poplar wood sheets and clamps. Then, I’m going to wrap the core in a wolf pelt. That way, I can get what I want and get to keep some money I was planning on spending on this project.
Poplar wood is in the mail, wolf pelt is next. I’ll post pics of the project for anyone interested.
