Once upon a time, Kris Cutlery had a very nice seax. I managed to get one, but haven't really done anything with it. They shipped unsharpened (not to be confused with blunt) in a plain wood scabbard and grip, which many compared to a Japanese shirasaya, but the grip seems glued on.
Going by memory, I think my blade is 20 or 21 inches long. Sold for about $150, differentially-hardened 5160, broken-back style. Some people had done some really nice things with theirs, but I'm not that crafty. Pity they discontinued them.
I think windlass has a few, but can't speak to their quality. Albion has one, but it's pricey.
Oof, not a lot of really good options there... Windlass, mostly. Deepeeka makes a few, but I've heard mixed things about them, so I, personally, would avoid them.
Not much out there under $300; I don't think even Driggers could do that anymore, but I'll let him decide that.
Oh yeah, Wolflund. I completely forgot about them. Most of their stuff is blunt but they have some sharps.
Their seax of beagnoth is practically a dead-ringer for the Kris Cutlery I mentioned before, though it costs almost twice as much and the sheath is extra on top of that... I'm also intrigued by some of the others, like their "Germanian" scramasax. Gonna have to remember these when/if I ever have money again...
Now follows the conclusion, that whosoever shall think or find himself in his fight too weak for the agent's, or patient agent, and therefore, or by reason of his drunkenness, or unreasonable desperateness shall press within the half sword, or desperately run in of purpose to give hurt, or at least for taking of one hurt, to give another, shall most assuredly be in great danger of death or wounds, and the other shall still be safe and go free. - PARADOXES OF DEFENCE, George Silver, 1599
If I was choosing, I would go for one of those recurved blades (250AD from Vimose or 225BC from Krogsbolle Bog).
5160 by L Driggers is pretty awesome - durable and tough, yet holds an edge like the Spartans held Thermopylae. If I had a wagonload of Benjamin’s, though, I’d go with a nice pattern welded blade.
I only have one seax. L Driggers made it, and it is awesome.
If you can convince him to make you a seax, I highly recommend doing so. Respectfully, $300 may be a bit optimistic, but it can’t hurt to send him a pm.
For between $400-500 you could get a pattern welded seax of 15 inches and simple grip from George Ezell. Can't go wrong there. Doesn't look like under $300 would get you something pattern welded and custom otherwise..
nerdthenord: Hi, I'm still alive. Doing well again all things considered

mrstabby: Mine gets pressed to the top as well, but that way the tip gets ground of, don't like that either. Unfortunately I'm an edge-perfectionist. Also one wrong move when unsheathing and the throat nicks the edge on either side.

AndiTheBarvarian: Perhaps I've got one from the batch for Matt Easton ?!?

AndiTheBarvarian: When I draw the saber it's automatically pressed with the spine to the scabbard so there's space for the edge to not touch the scabbard. When the false edge starts it's released but can be carefully draw completely without touching the scabbard.

AndiTheBarvarian: Too little gap for a needle, so also I see no way to get the glue in.
Mar 31, 2024 8:02:34 GMT
mrstabby: I was easily able to poke through the glue on all of my Windlass swords/daggers, then it just seems to wick in forever, it never was thick. I can't imagine how there isn't any dulling though, unless yours is less wide or the scabbard is bigger.

AndiTheBarvarian: There's not really an opening on mine, very good fit of guard and blade and some glue or epoxy in it. Since my scabbard doesn't dull the edge too I seem to be on the lucky side with Windlass this time.

mrstabby: Maybe it screams in pain now, but I like it..

mrstabby: PSA: Give your Windlass swords some superglue, they appreciate it. My 1796 drank 4g through the opening between guard and blade, now it rings much louder and vibrates much less.

mrstabby: What now, pulling a sword out of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? Intriguing!
Mar 29, 2024 12:49:08 GMT
AndiTheBarvarian: Dwayne Johnson disagrees!

rschuch: As anyone who's seen Excalibur knows, getting the sword INTO the rock isn't the problem, it's getting it back out again.

durinnmcfurren: Movie turned out better than it had any right to be considering how many times a blade was shoved into rock. Yes, even once would be too much, but it was way more than once.

Ramses1079: Yeah me too, which is a shame because he’s a good author. I guess that’s like when your favorite band releases a new album, and there’s always one or two tracks that you’re like “what were they thinking?”
