My son found a old rusted sword in the creek a few days ago after the water went back down. How can I tell if its real or a decor peice? We have gotten off enough rust to see what looks like a man on a horse. It's not heavy. Double bladed.very solid feeling. Has what looks like wire threading for the handle with a round steel ball on end. I can read TOL on blade. Cant read the rest. Any thoughts on this? We think it a cool find even if its nothing special!

Congratulations on a very cool find. I am always pleased to hear of the earth, a lake, or a river offering up a sword to a lucky recipient. Thanks for sharing.

It's probably a Spanish-made Toledo decorative, I used to have one from the 1970's that took an excellent edge, but I'm a little curious as to where you found it.

Very cool. Probably more attractive as a wall hanger now than when it first was made. What they are saying about it being a wall hanger or decorative simply means it's not useful for fighting purposes (I'd still rather not have it swung into me). It was made to simply look nice on a wall, not to be used for practice or sparring.
It's probably not going to feel like an actual sword might in the hand due to weight and balancing differences.

It was made to simply look nice on a wall, not to be used for practice or sparring. It's probably not going to feel like an actual sword might in the hand due to weight and balancing differences. The one I had was very decent steel, took a razor edge, handled all right, and I carried it at events and abused it variously for years and years. Some medieval broadsword pattern with a simple solid steel crossguard, engraved blade, and "TOLEDO" stamped just below the guard. One of the kids walked off with it, or I'd still have it. I recognize the pomegranate pommel and wire-wrapped grip on the OP sword, only mine wasn't a "Tizona", but a replica of one carried by some Spanish king.
Like I said, I'd like for the OP to tell us where they are geographically. While the odds are very much against it, if it was found anywhere in the "Spanish Borderlands" of the Southern and Southwest USA, the outside possibility of it being authentic Spanish colonial has to be ruled out. The Toledo smiths didn't just start making historical replicas in the 20th. Century.

We like in Fulton Ky. There is a creek that runs through behind out house. Well, that's that. Thank you. Cool find, anyway. As they aren't, so far as I know, making those any more, you've got a nice, if minor, collectible.
