So I got the Ronin Scratch and Dent RK Entry Level Samurai Sword #9. It’s super nice, and as I suspected I can’t see anything wrong with he blade. However, there’s a lot of rattle of the blade in the saya. The Habaki fits snugly (I think) into the koiguchi. The rattle seems to occur a lot lower in the saya. I have no clue how to lessen that (if you can at all) since I’m such a newbie. Anyone have any tips and suggestions? Thanks!

No real way to make that go away... probably why it was available in the scratch and dent sale ...

I've heard of some people using a long stick of sorts and sticking cotton balls down the saya, but I haven't tried it myself

I've heard of some people using a long stick of sorts and sticking cotton balls down the saya, but I haven't tried it myself Cotton wool is very absorbent and gets permanently compacted relatively quickly. A piece of some kind of soft plastic foam shaped to fit the inside of the scabbard would be better. Either way, the pro of this approach is that some kind of padding at the end of the saya can help to keep the tip of the blade from moving around, thus reducing or eliminating the clatter. The con is that any such material can also trap abrasive or corrosive stuff, and you're likely to have an extremely hard time getting it out again.

I sometimes use cotton polishing tissues soaked with petrol jelly, only 1/2 thin tissue. It helps against rattling and too loose scabbard fit. I wouldn't do this with expensive swords and swords that get dirty from cutting.

Unless you plan to wear the sword around all day, then what does it matter if it rattles around a bit? Did real samurai swords shake in the saya?
