Look at the facts rather than the hype. Look how many scares like this we've had in the past twenty years and what have become of them ? Nothing but a few deaths and a lot of hysteria. Shortly after the scare is started a vaccine is developed and it's all over. The world is not coming to an end over this one either. Swine flu, bird flu, SARS, MRSA, Ebola, anthrax and lets not forget that on 12:00 midnight 2000 all our computers were going to shut down and so would everything controlled by computers too. All are over and we're still here and I for one didn't lose a minute of sleep over any of them. A scared population is an easy to control population.
If you have extra cash now is the time to buy stocks because as soon as this one is over the stock market will jump right back up again. A scare like this is a great way to make rich people richer, think about it.

TL;DR - Keep calm, don't touch your face, and wash your hands.

Great. Now they locked down the retirement home where Holger's mum is... Can you imagine him? He is all "You will try!"

That's right MOK is going to put a lock on the coronavirus and it will all be over. AndiTheBarvarian I can't quit smoking, I never started. Maybe I should start so I can quit.

So basically the prevention for the virus is normal everyday proper hygiene practice? Interesting. Is washing your hands something nobody has been doing up to this point?

Great. Now they locked down the retirement home where Holger's mum is... Can you imagine him? He is all "You will try!" That was the right thing to do because most of the people who have died from this is in their 80's. One person walks in there with the virus and it could wipe the place out. Tell Holger to lighten up it's for their own good.

The scares amounted to little because people took action, locked down the problem areas and kept the stuff from spreading. A great deal of money and talent has gone into preventing these kind of pandemics from taking root. If you simply don't believe they're real, I refer you to the Spanish Flu. And as far as control, this is one area where the population should listen to warnings and heed lock downs. It's not a plot, it's a fight against something that, left unchecked, will prematurely end the lives of a great many elders.

It's not just the hand washing it's not touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands. Same thing applies to avoiding colds and the flu. The virus enters the body through them or open wounds. I can't remember when I had a cold last and don't believe I've ever had the flu. It's just common sense which is in short supply these days.

Not saying the virus is not real I'm saying getting hysterical over them is ridiculous. The plot is making it out to be bigger than what it is.

Having no vaccines means it's more dangerous for the more vulnerable people, the very old, the chronic ill (and the smokers), who can't get a vaccination like for the flu. Slowing down the spreading also means that the intensive care units may not be overwhelmed with serious ill people. For us "normal" people it's not very dangerous but some decent behavior can protect the vulnerable people.

Well, I wash my hands when I go to the bathroom or get them dirty, sure, but the thing that helps here is doing it every chance you get, thoroughly, with hot water and soap, for at least twenty seconds. Same thing as usual, but rather more frequently and rigorously.

It's also new, so we haven't had a chance to build neither herd nor individual immunities or resistances.

On a possibly trivial note: SARS, MERS, swine flu, avian flu, influenza, the common cold etc. are all coronaviruses. COVID-19 isn't a new kind of thing, just a new and therefore potentially more dangerous variation of the same old (just like H1N1 etc. were in their day).

China tried to contain the virus and immediately informed WHO. But it didn't work and now I am looking at Italy. This is a fairly modern and affluent society and they are not winning either. When your ICU units get overloaded, what do you do next?
I remember when my stepson had dengue a few years ago. He was put in a crowded hospital room full of mosquitos and no window screens-- with 3 other people who did not have dengue, including a baby.
Also, as far as the flu argument, when did the flu start a world recession?
