Great sword was really a weapon used against battlefield formations. They were used as bodyguard weapons too.

As I’ve said before imo the most likely function of the greatswordmen was bodyguarding the „Fähnrich“, in cases when worst came to worse – a break of the own formation during retreat or maneuvering. The Fähnrich needed protection to be able to move quicky and direct the reorganization of the formations. Then the mobility and versatility of the greatswordsmen came into play − in chaotic, but slightly more spaceous situations than "regular" close combat. Facing small numbers of opponents which may have managed to push through the lines, most likely armed with shorter swords, perhaps halberds. Not for breaking into formations or facing organized numbers of halbardiers or pikemen. Blocks of pikemen needed to be broken by outmaneuvering – movement of the own formation. Flanking. Outnumbering. And the wise use of artillery.

Ive tried some greatsword vs pike sparring. Boy is it difficult for the greatsword team! Im not sure cutting the pikes would work at all, and smacking the spears doesnt seem to do anything at all and just gets me stabbed in the face. This is the classic problem with using simulators and feders--the swords just glance off without doing against pike or spear. The theory is that a sharp blade can bite into the wood and create a fixed point of control for long enough to get inside the reach of the spear or pike.
