So I’m very very new to this sword collecting. I decided I would like a very particular katana; green ito, saya and sageo, white same, good sori, and the rest of the furniture I can deal with or replace myself. So I’m looking online using keywords and trying not to go too astray with sellers and brands, but the ones that closest match what I’m looking for are $700+, and I’m not ready to be that kind of collector yet. I did find some seller on eBay, tommy_lee85, but the few posts I found on here (from 2017 and prior) seem to warn to stay away. The next closest thing I can seem to find to do it a custom T10 Ryujin on the SBG store for $230. So I guess I’m asking is the $100 eBay sword not worth the risk when another $150 would get me what it seems would be a much safer bet?

It comes down to a couple of things...are you good with waiting over 5 weeks to receive and what you are looking for, as well as the cost you are willing to pay. Normally I would recommend buying from here first. You can't go wrong and your wait time would be much less plus you definitely will get good support. Buying from a random seller on eBay for a functional sword may be a hit or miss. There are some good ones but even more experienced folks can run into trouble.

It may be better honestly to wait.

Are you a gambling man?
In reality that does not sound like too complicated order but like Jacky said there is always a small risk from buying straight from China.

Hi to you and everybody else, i am new here too but already have some swords, euro, fantasy, japanese style and chinese. When it comes down to reliable and affordable katana i can really recommend Jkoo/Sinosword. I have three of their swords, two of them being very cheap due to special promotion, and they hold up great. Quite nice finish for the price as well. They also offer custom orders, but that seems to be problematic sometimes looking at some reviews in here. I also heard good things about "Munetoshi" brand swords, sold at "Sword'n Armory", but up to this day i ahve no personal experience with them. Ebay sellers are indeed, as posted by other guys in here, a hit or miss. I have good experience with Ryan Sword and Hanbon Forge. Huawei Sword is great stuff but more expensive, and i have been burned by "great-katana" and "tommy lee", as well as "luyie sword". Risky business.
