The Orville is amazing stuff. And speaking on the not Trek Trek series/movies stuff...my God...Galaxy Quest. They freaking nailed it. Yeah, mostly, but IIRC Galaxy Quest blew one important tradition. The redshirt lived through it. Ya wanna know a REAL redshirt survivor...SCOTTIE! Suppose we have to further subdivide into red clad "security" class. Bottom line is if it's the beginning of an episode and you are on security detail and beaming down, just save time and set the phasor on kill, place upon temple and fire.

I never understood why all of the Federation ships weren't crewed with the very best of the best. Transporters are just big replicators, so every ship should be captained by Picard, every ambassador a copy of Sarek, and a plethora of Datas writing poetry.

The galaxy would soon fill with planets teeming with a cosmic orgy of Kirks and scantily clad green women.

Not really but if all the ships were captained by a copy (clone of sorts), they would all react similarly, not exactly the same but similar enough for opponents familiar with one to anticipate the choices of another. Yes their experiences would branch out after their "cloning" but up to that point they would have the same memories, disposition and temperament. You'd also be setting up a class system that would exclude non-Picards from captaining a starship, non-AIs from being science officers and probably scientists.

The transporters are very wishy washy with exactly how they work and what the philosophical implications are. I think it’s best to avoid dwelling too much on them, and apparently so do the writers.
