I can think of several recent events when a sword was used, mostly katanas for self-defence. There was a case I think in the ‘50s when the Brits lost 21 men armed with FNLs to 4 or 5 men armed with shamshirs. I can't think of the Japanese official's name that was assassinated with a katana in recent times. The list goes on. It would be fair to say that the sword no longer holds the place it once did, but to say no longer useful-no. Do you have a source or more details on the case with the shamshirs? Here is the video. I had just about given up finding it again when it popped up. I apologize for being off on some of the details, it has been several years since I last saw the video. Enjoy.

I have that book thanks and found it most informative. I was excited on reading the accounts of the black powder pistols. Some I knew from previous readings but mostly it confirmed what I had discovered with my experimentation with those pistols. I used mostly repros but a couple of Colts did pass through my hands. I am proud to say after some years of trying I learned how to load those and still have reliable discharges after a week, maybe a few days longer than a week in some cases. What I had learned about round vs conical bullets was also confirmed in that book and contrary to the opinion I formed from visiting museums. That was a welcomed surprise. I am at present reading “British Sword Fighting 1600-1645” and have a copy of “Bloody Blades of the British Empire” waiting, both by the same author, Kinsely. So far I have not come across the use of shamshirs, scimitars, nor tulwars as described by Lindy Beige. However the warfare during that time and the theatres of operation required a different technique. In the back of my mind I remember something about holding those swords close to the body and using as in the video. I’d say it would depend on the circumstances.

Good advice, but it sure would look awesome! Talk about going out with style. If you gotta go, then go out with style . We all will meet our end sooner or later, at least make it worth remembering End of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.

Circumstances have to be right to wield blade effectively, but they exist...but if one is foolish one will end up like the scimitar expert in Indiana Jones taking a "chill pill".

A thread with a Warhammer reference and interesting shamshir discussion, and Indiana Jones reference. This place can be great Too bad trying to EDC swords is viewed so poorly nowadays. www.asiaone.com/singapore/mrt-samurai-swordsmanship-coachKinda limits the day to day applicability of my learnings

Not for me! I'm in Texas! I can carry any sword I want as long as I don't swing it around or anything threatening like that.Everywhere except Hospitals, Public Schools, Government buildings, and private property that chooses to ban them.

Texas gets to have all the fun (and bbq) Back when I lived in Seattle some of my pocket knives were illegal due to blade length and I had to keep them back in Vancouver. (variation in laws around weapons within the states is so confusing)

You LUCKY SOB you. I'm up in the Seattle area, so while much is still (for NOW, anyway) legal, you want things kept under hat.

I used to carry a large bowie knife under my coat, under the arm. I remember reading they were made the length they are for that reason, and I found that it works very well.

End of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid. Whole bolivian army and such stuff? "Guns or knife, Butch?" Don’t even need to watch the clip. “There’s no rules in a knife fight!” One of, if not my favorite movie scenes of ALL time. Thanks D & H
