I have a T10 blade in a buffalo horn shirasaya that looks amazing but I would get it mounted if I was going to use it. The buffalo horn shirasaya is nice for storing it on display though Surely not the entire thing is buffalo horn? A few parts, I can see. Even the pictured one has, what I assume to be, a buffalo horn "fuchi" sort of thing. Only time I've ever cut my hand because my katana slipped was when it fell out of its saya as I was wearing it around, like an idiot teenager, and like an idiot I decided to catch it. Turns out I missed the handle. Kukhuri are also used (seldom overall but often enough) for thrusting, but have no hand protection at all. Of course, the grip is shaped in such a way that reduces the chances of hands slipping, anyway.

Ah, okay, so the "fuchi" bit. That's what I thought.

I was hoping for a pic of the buffalo horn shirasaya you mentioned. I don't think I've ever seen one before and I'm really curious

Just imagine if you could get enough alternating black and brown buffalo horn koiguchi pieces to cover the length of the saya and tsuka. Put together well, and all polished up, it could be a thing of beauty.

I had picked up a Chokuto blade off the boards some years ago that appears to be a mahogany with black plastic. The mount loosened immediately after cutting a mat and some day may end up in real mounts. It was originally from an ebay seller and iirc listed as T10. It is a pretty hamon. I would not use similar examples for regular cutting, glued or not. While quite sharp and bisecting a mat easily, the habaki was immediately adrift I don't think this one is glued and there's no reason to dismount it until I have a real plan. Cheers GC

Like I said as long as your not thrusting with it then your fine, the wood isn’t that slippery that you will lose grip. If you try to thrust into a hard target though then that’s on you lol.

Musha blades just are not worth it to me to be mounted so might as well just keep it how it is.
