Let it be known, that I, Rufus Scorpius Americanus (AKA "Red Scorpion"), will be crossing blades with markus313 in Essen, Germany, on Sunday the 9th of February, in the Year of Our Lord 2020. It will play out something like this: Phase I: talk about swords, look at swords, examine swords, talk about stuff and swords. Phase II: Go to the gym and cross blades. No technique exchange before that. It will be a double blind spar. I know next to nothing about HEMA, and even less about marcus313 skill level. (with vids)
Phase III: Exchange technique. Learn from each other. Spend the rest of the day goofing off. (with vids)
Phase IV: Post vids on forum and get roasted for all my mistakes. (looking forward to that!)
markus313 will have home field advantage, I will have jet lag and a borrowed sword. Should make it about even .
And there you have it. Barring any issues with international travel and such, it will be "GAME ON"! It will, at the very least, add some excitement to the forum....

Markus is setting me up with a local guide that he says knows a shortcut through the Teuteborg forest and it will save me time going home.

Naturally. I don't know the terrain, so it's wise to hire a local to lead us through the woods. Besides, if there is any trouble, I'll have 2 legions with me. Nothing to worry about.

Take an umbrella in case it rains. Don't want to get your bowstrings wet.

Markus is setting me up with a local guide that he says knows a shortcut through the Teuteborg forest and it will save me time going home. No need to visit the forest because today Teutoburg Forest isn't the same forest than in Roman times. It was named Teutoburg Forest just in the 19th Century because they thought it could be there. The battle very probably was near a village called Kalkriese, they made matching findings there. They have a museum: www.kalkriese-varusschlacht.de/en/museum/the-exhibition/

I feel truly honored to have RufusScorpius visiting me in Essen, Germany. It's gonna be a great, fun day. Already honing the boffers

The honor is mine. And I have no idea what a boffer is. It will be a good day, yes, a good day indeed.
I wish I could bring my stuff with me, but airport security- what can you do?

I wish I could bring my stuff with me, but airport security- what can you do? Yes, it’s a pity. I have ordered a katana simulator for our meeting from this site:
Hopefully it gets here before the weekend. Otherwise you’ll have to use one of my longswords as an Odachi ...
Not everyone is perfectly happy using these trainers, but I think their advantages overshadow their weaknesses (they tend to “bounce” a bit on impact and grips are a bit too round, but are nicely weighted/balanced, quite stiff and most importantly safe enough for full contact without full body protection).

Domo! That simulator will do. The round handle isn't much of a problem since there is no edge anyway. I can do what I need with that just fine.

I hope the sparring isn't too horrible. I have a completely destroyed right knee and it will be heavily braced- so my ducking and dodging will be more like loping and waddling. But that won't stop me from passing up this opportunity. As it may be, I've been wanting to do something like this for a very long time.
It's Put Up or Shut Up time. Whatever may be, I stood on the field of honor. And I reserve the right to criticize everybody from that point forward (and vice-versa)- and reserve the right to talk smack while doing it.
Just have to make it through TSA from home to NY, then TSA again from NY to Dusseldorf, through customs, get luggage, then taxi to hotel, then Deutsch Bahn to Essen, then link with marcus313. Easy. Should be bright eyed and bushy tailed and full of vim an vigor... It's only an 18 hour journey.

No worries. Also I’m quite sure to say that the last bit of ego got beaten out of me a long time ago, at least regarding MA. “Win” or “lose”, this doesn’t matter to me. The experience itself is a gain, of worth. I’m just thankful for you spending the time and effort to meet and train with me. There will be a lot to take away for me from our meeting. I just hope I can do my part to make it an enjoyable time for you, too.
And if I get my ass beat - hell, all the better!

I'm not in a "win" or "lose" mindset, but you know, I mean you really KNOW that lots of people will be looking at this as a way to "prove" one style is better/worse than the other. I can say right now, don't judge anything based on me. I'm not an expert. I don't represent any school or style. I just want to experience something different for my own edification, and for others to enjoy as well. I will be doing my level best to not trip over myself or fall flat on my face. That is my true goal It will afford a rare opportunity to simulate a random street meeting with a random swordsman to enter into a random fight with somebody you really don't their skills at all. It will be as close to the "good ol' days" as we can get. I'm looking forward to the techniques where we can slow things down and go over the technical stuff. I want to blend some of that into my practice. Of course, it's all for naught if I fall asleep on the DB on the way over and end up in Poland.
