After seeing a friend’s cutting practice with the Devil’s Edge “Celtic Sword” and it’s surprisingly low price point ($85 US on markdown), I’ve become interested in buying one. However, I like to have a blunt practice sword to use in drills and sparing to match my cutters. I haven’t always been able to find a good match for all my buys, but when I do it is very satisfying. To get to the point, what do you fine folk think the best match for this sword is? I prefer metal sparring swords, but polypropylene is also good. Picture of the sword and its measurements attached. There are also xiphos and gladius trainers on purpleheart that are about the size of that celtic sword.

Thanks for the recommendation. Based on the phrasing, is there something about short swords in particular that makes steel a bad idea? I hadn't heard anything about that from my locals.

I mean, you could try it. With enough protective gear it'll work. But long steel trainers work well, IMO, because they are flexible. The shorter it is, the stiffer it will be. Then it has to be thin to be light enough to not cause serious impact wounds, but the thinner it is the thinner the edge has to be. Think about how dangerous it would be just sand the edge off a machete and spar with it. I know some people do that, but at that point you have to severely limit the sparring and use hard protection.
There is much less action from a blade bind with a 20" blade, so a steel trainer's blade-on-blade feel matters a lot less.

Good points, we use 350 rated stuff and clamshell heavy gloves so I wasn't really thinking about something one handed being dangerous.

Safety - flex daggers for example are notorious for being very flexible, and a club mate of mine uses the last third of a hanwei practical rapier which retains good flex for sparring. Not sure if they're doing customs again but castille would likely make a good short sword.

Black Fencer have been known to make excellent custom wasters, both steel and synthetic. Purpleheart Armoury also has a line of synthetic wasters in all sorts of exotic shapes that may have something suitable, like maybe the ida?

Ah, going for a custom make wasn't something I had thought about, thank you. I'll definitely look into that.

I am willing to wager you can get a steel sparring sword of that size and have it be safe as well.

I am willing to wager you can get a steel sparring sword of that size and have it be safe as well. Thanks for the input, I'll just start with a thorough gear check and low intensity sparing, and see how people feel about higher intensity sparing based on that.
