lol my gosh.. just read that dumpster fire of a thread. Guys, it doesn't matter if you have tons of well researched knowledge, or decades and decades of experience. If you're a nasty person, you will never actually be happy.. just entertained moment to moment by your hobbies. Hopefully this is a wake up call for some of us. Bored of people who watched one episode of Forged in Fire doesn't come close to explaining that garbage. I wonder if these threads only happen in the winter? Maybe we need a daily post limit from December to March Agreed, I can respect someone who is kind and has no idea of what they are talking about. But someone who is knowledgeable and is a jerk will never get my respect.

Beach towels laid out...bikini-clad lady by your side, some Island Calypso music playing...warm breeze on your skin...feeling the spray off the sea on your face...then pulling out your cutlass and throwing on your tri-corn hat and robbing everybody of their shiny trinkets. Everyone here needs to lighten up. Life's too short to get bent up by ANYTHING on a website. It ain't worth the stress. If you have a ton of apples, you are going to have a few bad ones. Don't let the bad ones spoil the whole pile. Roll the bad ones to the side and enjoy the sweet ones.

Id prefer a nice onsen soak with a 綺麗日本人女 and some 寿司 and then go back and read manga and watch anime and game with my gamer girl. This is the dream of a nerd like mwah

The point is... Some get all bent outta shape by posts, and that needs to stop. We're driving away good folks who just need guidance. Some might be untrainable, but that's ok too. Lighten up... And me... I'd want time in a hot tub, massage, then a shaded beach chair, waves and a bucket of iced beer...like a corona ad.
PS: this is me saying when I see you getting nasty, I'm stepping in early. Be warned.

This thread reminds me when I started over two years ago and I was clueless and started giving some 'advices' after a few months in...
Oh wait, I've gathered a whole TWO years of reading material and handling a dozen different swords/styles of weapons. I'm still clueless and learning on a lot of stuff.
That is why I am becoming more and more reluctant offering counsels to newcomers in the hobby, I know I don't know as much as I would like, eh, so take what I write with that grain of salt in mind, and take my experience for what its worth. But I continue reading, buy subject books and train. Started some crafting in the hobby, acquiring more tools and doing more. Hopefully I may learn enough to one day be worth my salt when I crack my fingers and type something 'useful'.
A lot of people on the website have been going for many long years in collecting, handling and/or crafting, opinions may differs but for one I am glad we can find such reference materials from knowledgeable hobbyists.

I couldn't-care-less about arms and armor. I'm in this hobby purely for the pedantry. I always wanted to be a Classics professor, but translating things from Attic Greek is hard. Instead, I feign interest in a variety of hobbies in order to vent my spleen at all the clueless noobs who dare to confuse Boy Commandos issue #15, an original print edition of the Black Lotus card, Pete Rose's rookie stats, and the spectrographic analysis of Wootz steel.

As someone who was on the tail end of a locked thread today I was wondering what the opinions of long time members here are on how the community should deal with these cases.
I take full responsibility for fanning a flame more than I should have. I truly beleive that the posts I was referencing should not be on this forum but I am not sure if I dealt with it appropriately.
I am not a long term member but I really like the good parts of this forum. When threads derail to material that are likely to offend and then the thread stays here either locked or in the archives for posterity how does that hurt this site in the eyes of existing and new members? This is a public forum after all and Google will send people to the good and bad.
Should we just let bad threads fade into the sunset?
Should we call out bad behaviour directly? (in a PM instead of the thread?)
Should we just report posts to moderators and leave it to them?
I truly do not envy the job of the moderators here. So what can we as a community do to keep this place as a great resource?

I feel like the stated rules of this forum should be enforced uniformly, and aggressively by the moderators. Letting stuff slide sometimes, but not on other occasions sends a message that such behavior is generally tolerated, and/or the rules only apply to some people, but not others.
If we have a NO POLITICS rule, then there should be ZERO POLITICS allowed in our discussions.
Anyone disregarding these rules should be warned (under most circumstances), and their rule-breaking comment or thread removed (especially if it is inflammatory or insensitive). Subsequent actions should include temporary bans, and ultimately permanent ones, dependent on the recidivism or severity of the problematic behavior.
I think anything remotely like racist screeds or direct threats of violence should immediately result in a permanent ban.
If the rules are not going to be fairly and consistently enforced, there shouldn't be any rules at all.

You... You... Made me blow diet soda out my nose. LOLOLOLOLOL... Ok, to the other comments, I've sat on my hands and watched bad behaviors grow and be allowed here. No more. Think like adults, TALK to each other civilly, and PM if needed, and if you feel angry, WALK AWAY from it... Life's too short to blow up your blood pressure over 'internet fights'. The idea is you all deal with each other, and IF the mods need to step in we will. That hasn't worked so well, so we're going to actively police, and please let us know if you spot something we've missed.

Nah so far it's been mainly name calling. It would be really silly to attack each other with swords over the internet. You know what they need to do is challenge each other on a internet sword fighting video game. Get your hostilities worked out on the game that way no blood is spilled. Well no real blood anyways.

I am genuinely asking as I don't believe I've ever seen that here. I'm not aware of any threats of violence here. That was an example of behavior extreme enough that I think the mods should address directly with a perma-ban (instead of escalating corrective actions).

An actual threat of violence would merit an instant perma-ban, yes.

I'm personally going to move to reporting posts as advised by an admin.
I agree with zen hydra that enforcement should be swift and consistent.
For e.g in the thread I am referencing the other party and I both broke the rules. Calling out what I see as bad behaviour was political in nature, and despite my strong aversion to the posts, this is not the place to debate these topics and I should have remembered that there are no winners in internet debates.
In the interest of fairness and uniform application of rules I would not argue against any enforcement against both parties in such situations. Yes that includes me, but keeping this place clean is more important than me reading and commenting about swords during a coffee break.

Somebody might write something (probably based on the Unity engine), and host it here, featuring arms and armor copied from the vendors or reviews here, and meshed from videos and stills of sites in Longquan. Considering its stated purpose, we could call it "Anal Kombat".
