I just got a Blackfencer cup hilt rapier (short blade), and loving it! To date, it's the most lively training sword I own, only comparable to my Purpleheart Hungarian Saber (which gave me reason to plan out a future custom piece from Castille). But I digress!
I've been looking at the choices out there for the more economic swordsmen, and appreciate all the input on each of them! I'm looking for a great thruster, but can also deliver decent draw cuts. Given all I've seen, these four are prime candidates, and I trust the feedback to help make the better purchase. Thanks!

Funny you mention castille - they do make sharps on request I am of the persuasion that you may as well get your sharp to fit your training piece.

I've thought about it, though I'm torn on the quillons style to a clamshell guard with knucklebow (s-curved or no bottom guard). If I do, it'll be on the back burner a few more weeks than expected, but I've heard it's more than worth it!

I kept getting the forward quillon caught in my pocket (consequence of a bad habit of cocking the sword back too much) so I went with no forward quillon. Plus I wanted to keep it as light weight as I could.

Just got a Christus Imperat. No experience with rapiers, but it does seem whippy to me. Again though, no experience. Take it with a huge grain of salt.
Also some ever so slight rattle when striking to find the vibration nodes.

Out of those 4, based on specs, I would have to go with the CS Cavalier. I owned a Christus Imperat and found it too flexible and handled more poorly then it should IMO. Very nice looking though. The problem with all of these options, except MAYBE the Cavalier is that I think their dimensions lend poorly to their stiffness. I think out of all of the budget rapier options..this one is probably the stiffest. It can be found for about 100$ less at most places.. Take a look at the specs on KOA though. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=CS88CHR&name=Cold+Steel+Ribbed+Shell+Swept+Hilt+RapierHey Brother, I own the CS RS Swept Hilt and would say it should be purchased with the understanding that you are not going to be swinging around with quickness due to it being a big monster...but NO worry about whippy. Best be paired with an off-hand dagger and used with single time heavy rapier styles.

Would you see the blade is indeed over a 1/4" at the thickest? I don't possess the proper instruments to give an exact enough measurement but it's sure thicker than the English Backsword I sent back (the blade that got me on this forum, btw). KOA give a measurement of 6.3mm (darn near 1/4") to 5.4mm taper. Thought about thinning blade near the point so the POB would get nearer the guard to increase agility, but that's a lot of time, money, elbow grease.

I have a CS rapier and it's not the nimbleest blade, and it's as whippy as a wet noodle. It's nearly impossible to give accurate point. Just not gonna happen.

If you're talking the CS Ribbed Shell Swept Hilt than you must have received a lemon of some kind as mine is just ridiculously robust, almost to a fault (more Incredible Hulk than noodle) as I want to take some meat off.

Ha, I like my noodles in a bowl. Question: does your whole sword kind of wriggle or something if you wave it or does it bend at only one point like at the guard, front or rear section? I wonder if CS would send you a replacement if asked?
