Don't take everything on Wikipedia as well researched fact. Kanebo are not some unwieldy lump of lead. I've owned one, and they are as agile as any European poleaxe, and used in a very similar context. How much does the one you have weigh? I could see maybe a 10 pound one but not a 30 pound one. All I’m saying is you see antique nihonto being sold but not a lot of kanabo. Why would they use that when compared to a lighter more swift sword or spear. Well yeah. Metal is easier to keep in good condition and preserve than wood. It's also more valuable so more incentive to keep it nice longer.

Weird, when I punch in kanobo I get wood with iron studs. I think some modern ones may be made of wood. Here is the kanji of it “The kanabō (金棒) (literally: "metal stick")”

Aside from long pikes, few non-firearm single person weapons weigh as much as 10 pounds.

I'm thinking someone just likes to have something to respond to. Most anything will do.

A quick Google search got me an interesting viking swords thread which shows authentic kanobo - seem to be wooden as a base. www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=20405

I’m not saying they never existed, just are rare. The name is “metal pole” but some have been made of wood with metal on it. I think it just has to be some type of iron on it
