I'm a fan of mad science, and ridiculous ambition.
What are some of the most 'out there' personal project ideas you have, and actually hope to attempt one of these days?
I'll go first:
I want to try to make brigandine armor with epoxy laminate plates which combine steel, cuir bouilli leather, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and Kevlar. The goal being the hybridization of old and new materials to make armor that can stop swords and bullets, and also look cool AF.
I would also love to learn enough about gun smithing to be able to make functional firearms with a sci-fi and/or fantasy aesthetic. For example, an oversized revolver that fires 12 gauge shotgun slugs, and looks like something a Space Marine might use.

Very ambitious Zen. When you make that 12 gauge revolver please film it and please film the ambulance crew working on you. If you can find any read some of the accounts of people shooting the Casull 454 when it first came out. Some bloody foreheads when they weren’t expecting that much recoil. Can’t say your revolver wouldn’t work or you couldn’t handle it. But in the words of Indi’s sidekick “ you go first”.😏. Not into armor but that sounds pretty cool. Definitely would like to see it. If you decide to check it bulletproofness (not sure that’s a word), again “you go first”. Haha.

I've fired a S&W .500 Magnum before, and my theoretical 12 gauge revolver would have enough mass to mitigate the recoil. I'm not concerned on that front. So, what ridiculous projects do you have simmering on the back burner?

So, what ridiculous projects do you have simmering on the back burner? Lots of mass would lower recoil but not sure how comfortable that would be on a handgun for your wrists and shoulders. And I wasn’t critiquing, just pointing out what first came to mind. Would actually like to see this. In fact I’m going to google that and see if it’s been done. As for any ridiculous projects, I have none. Very few projects at all except a few sword ones and those take money. Something I think most of us lack in abundance.

Holy sh*t Zen, there are a bunch of 12 gauge revolvers out there! Haven’t kept up with guns for quite a few years. Will have to read some reviews on them. Still like your idea of making it look sci-fi.

I've already done my wild projects. Getting guns to and from the range in the winter on a bicycle was one such adventure. I tried an array of on-bike mounts until settling on a mix of BOB sled and backpack.

Thinking of developing a humane feline repellent that functions primarily during human nap times.

I'm telling you amstel78 just eat the dang cat and be done with it. Then that means I'll have to buy my kids a new cat, and the cycle starts all over again. Edit: in all seriousness, perhaps I should train the cat to wear laser beams on his head.

Become immortal. I’m absolutely serious too. People often think of aging as being natural. It’s not. It’s a disease caused primarily by mitochondrial decay. Aging is a flaw we need to fix.

That would be one heck of a new thread. The tough nut of aging is the physical universe seems to demand and be geared toward entropy. I think the armor/shield line of inquiry near the top of any list I'd make for myself. We are most of us, blade nuts, so we're somewhat already there but just talking about ANOTHER crazy hobby line.

I wanted to laminate layers of fibreglass and steel in particular

Not trying to derail zen’s thread, but I’ve thought about this a lot. Read a lot of sci-fi about this. Some problems, the biggest one is overpopulation. I personally think that is the number one problem of our planet(I get some crap and strange looks whenever I’ve said this to people). Now make people immortal(or nearly) with the same or higher birth rate? Not good. We should talk about this in its own thread if someone wants to start one. Now back to our regularly scheduled program. Sorry zen.

Create the perfect cut and thrust sword, suited for all fighting situations with a blade heavy enough to deal debilitating cuts through a wool coat, but light enough to use for hours on end without significant fatigue and nimble enough to manipulate the point with the palm and fingers.

Once your prototype is perfected, please put ‘em into production!
