Started forging a railroad spike knife today with my dad out of my foundry as I do not currently own a forge. I think it is comming out well so far!

Thanks! My dad helped me a lot with it and I’m sure to people like L driggers this probably looks awful as they are masters lol but I didn’t expect to get this far with it

Doesn't look awful for a first try at all!

I've seen a lot worse first knives. If I ever pick up a hammer, I'm sure mine will look terrible.
A few of us have seen a lot of the big names start out and we know their progress, so keep at it if you wanna get there one day.

I hope to get better over time, I will need to buy an actual forge eventually lol

Buy? Bah...make one I was going to do that with a foundry, but it turned out being the same price as buying one lol. The guy who made the video said it would be under $20 and it ended up being like $120

Good going man. I've wanted to do this for a while too. Would be a neat hobby

Looks good. How well does it cut? Also curious if you know what sort of carbon content the dog spike has, they range from mild steel to medium carbon steel. I've even seen wrought iron ones.

Forging is a lot of fun! I don't usually don't get to do any though: breaks of living in an apartment. Though I recently got the chance to forge a Viking style tomahawk; I'll have to post pics once I finish the tempering.

We have not fully sharpened it yet but it is already getting pretty sharp so once it is done I will do a test cut. From what I have read, high carbon railroad spikes are basically 1045 steel and the others are mild carbon. I am not completely positive as we went to a local train track were they throw out old rusted ones and found a few nice ones so most likely just high carbon.

I have never done much research into axes or tomahawks but I do like them The first thing I ever forged was a little tomahawk. It wasn't perfect, but I think I did pretty well for my first time. This one I'm doing now was done by bending and forge welding an old file to create the eye (making the eye on an ax or tomahawk is the hardest part IMO). Luckily I was working with a guy who's way more experienced with forging, which was good because I've never successfully forge welded anything.

It doesn’t look bad at all for this stage. Stick with it, or you maybe losing your calling.
