Hello! I am relatively new to Swords and have been ( and still is ) saving up for a nice katana for around $1500. looking for a nice looking katana that can be displayed but the most important thing is functionality. I will be doing laito with it mostly with the ocasional cutting up stuff like bamboo. Im looking mainly for a great katana for under $1500 and a good smith that could forge me a great katana for $1500. If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask. Thanms in advance!!

What kind of steel are you looking for? Spring steel? Took steel? Etc. Citadel and Motohara have some nice katana, but those are a bit out of your range. For bamboo I would recommend a T10 or 1095 as I doubt L6 bio nite will be an option in your range. Hanwei has some more expensive katana as well. Here is an example of a T10 hanwei sells and has many others like it wish you the best. *Edit* (If you ask in the classifieds, you could find a nice used citadel for your price range most likely.) (ronin katana, huawei, hanwei, musashi, musha, dynasty forge, citadel, motohara, windlass makes an interesting katana, cold steel, I personally like swords of northshire but not everyone agrees with that, sinosword, jkoo,) I’m sure others can list a lot more. Those are just some off my mind that I have heard good things about. Braden

Personally I would start a little cheaper on a katana myself. Bamboo can mess your blade up bad if you cut it wrong, especially harder carbon steels like 1095 or T10. Or at least start with water bottles. A good spring steel is an awesome start for something like that as it is a lot more forgiving than a harder steel with no silicon. Just be careful. Braden

I believe Motohara prices starts at 1700$ US for their base production models, not much more than your budget. I have read repetitively that they are the best katana around right now for tameshigiri, overall quality and looks for the price. I am saving to get one myself.

There is a Bugei Crane katana for sale in the classifieds here. 28.5 inch blade, 11 inch handle and a very good blade with not a lot of "niku" making it a very good grass cutter. I have used one on a few targets and was impressed with it for a production blade. Seller is asking $900 which is a good price for an entry level quality production blade. sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/58036/bugei-dragonfly-katana-price-reducedYou really don't wanna go and do a custom blade because at this point it sounds like you don't even know what you really want or need in a sword. Without having experience to know what you want it's gonna be hard to tell the smith what to make for you. What you think you want now most likely won't be what you want in the future as you learn more. Selling low end custom will be a lot harder than a well cared for mid range production blade

That would be an awesome choice if you want something nicer. The cool thing is I hear they are like tanks so even if you mess up some cuts, motohara would be the best brand to do it with on an expensive scale because I think it could take it better than say some other brands or Nihonto

Yeah, looks like they are! I had a look at Cottontail custom stuff and they are pretty nice too, but I think the Motohara would be better suited for me. One question, whats the general pricing for a custom Motohara and is there a 'default' steel or do I get to choose? Thanks in advance!

A custom would probably be closer to 2k and up, really depends on what you order. You could pick your own steel, I think motohara is most know for their L6 bionite steel though. Cottontail customs is not really their own brand but sells stuff like motohara, hanwei, citadel, etc. They do work on them like new tsukamaki and tsuba and then re sell them at a great price.

Starting price is $1800. When you're ready to order, send a message to their FB page and discuss your requirements with the owner. Customs from EBM usually are $2200 and up; all depends on your blade and koshirae selections. Geometry and steel-selection will depend on your intended usage. www.facebook.com/EvolutionBlades/

I think that sounds like a sweet collection Once you get a Motohara, you won't care about the other stuff. Motohara easily beats anything else in the price point they play in with cutting performance, koshirae, and build quality. No comparison. That said, it would not be a bad idea to get a Feilong, then get a Motohara later. The Feilong swords Cottontail Customs sells are among best of Chinese production kats in the sub $500 price point.
