Hello there,
I'm brand new to the forum, but I have often lurked for information and reviews for some time. Anyway...
Being an 8th generation Californian, I can trace my direct ancestry to a Spanish soldier/carpenter who came to Alta California with Fr. Serra in 1769. That is one of many things that gave me a love for history, including that of old California. With that in mind, I am looking to get crafted an Espada Ancha, or "wide sword" that were often carried by the soldiers and settlers of the Spain's then back-water colony. From my research, many of the early versions of these swords were imported from Spain and the German states, with many of them being similar in design to hunting hangers or they were sabers that were cut down to purpose. I found that the missions and presidio commanders were responsible for their orders of swords and they procured up to a few dozen at a time, probably due them using up the blades and that supply ships from Spain came only a couple times a year. Later models were often made in the colony and overtime tended to look more like glorified machetes as the 19th century dragged on. From my research, some historians tend to conflate the Espada Ancha with the M1728 cavalry sword, which could be partially true, but I am inclined to believe that they are two different weapons.
So, I am acquainted with a smith who said he could forge me a usable reproduction, which could go great with my collection as well as be used in displays when I present at a local historical center.
My problem... is that I need help in creating a draft for the smith to work from. I am no artist, nor mathematically inclined for measurements with the sword's dimensions.
Is there any one here on the forum who could help me with creating a draft for one? There are some talented folks on this forum and I would appreciate any help I could get.
Thank you!
