Well, for starters, that's more of a tanto at only 8" nagasa.
I've not seen many, I'd almost say any kussaki moroha-zukuri tanto (full moroha, yes; just half the blade, no) before, so this is very interesting to me.
Can't really help on age, but the shirasaya and uh...pouch?...intrigue me.
Any chance of getting the handle off? Should just need to push the pin out and slide it down. What's under the hood can tell us more than what's not.

It's not old as in antique, but made in recent times. That's not a wakizashi.

Tanto, kogarasu-maru sugata. Would like to see the nakago. Looks like it was mounted for WWII? BUT, that leather covering the shirasaya looks brand new.

My apologies, I don't know the lingo but I did carefully get the mekugi out, the blade is solidly stuck. (I didn't touch the blade btw)

(I didn't touch the blade btw) If you feel comfortable you can use a soft piece of wood and a mallet to gently tap on the handle swapping sides(near the habaki/blade collar) I imagine the fuchi on the tsuka is buffalo horn though so be careful. The handles usually shrink do to climate changes. Take your time if you do decide to do this.

I tried that method and it worked beautifully. Thanks! Hmmm,I dont know what to think about this. Doesnt look to be older than WWII. Habaki does not look well made at all. It appears to be a 2 piece design but it looks strange and isn't fitted well. The nakago shape and yasurime(file marks) look good to me. I have heard of blades being sold post war to GIs and I'm wondering if this may be one. These are just my opinions.

Nakago looks legit to me; pity it's mumei. Doesn't look terribly old, I think someone suggested WW2-ish? That seems about right. More than 50, less than 100 years old, I'd say. I also have no idea what I'm talking about.

Okay, must've been the photos. Habaki looks fine. Looks to be a copper habaki with gold wash. Others can chime in but IMO I don't think it's any older than 1930s.

Definitely an interesting piece, regardless of age. It's the real deal, at least.

Isn't this a rather typical pilot kamikaze or officer's tanto? Basically, yes. The more I look at it, the more I see it isn't made to very high standards.

Thanks for the additional info! Especially that last link, it's even got a identical koshirae! I had a feeling it was a pilot's tanto but was curious about the blade as it didn't look like the typical tanto. Thanks again!

Shoot, I keep forgetting about those. Works for me.
Still interesting to see this sugata.
