While putting "historical" and "Xena" in the same sentence gives me nausea, I'll point out that, being a contemporary of Herakles, she would have most likely carried a Hittite sword if she had iron, but more probably a Mycenaean bronze rapier as previously noted.
In any event, your design looks good.
I appreciate your feedback. This sword is based on my imagined re-write of the show, which would take place in the same era as Julius Caesar.

Xena was a pure fantasy show. My idea is to set the events of her life in a grounded historical reality, making it historic fiction. Braveheart is historic fantasy in my opinion.

IMHO, a better period would be in the Bronze Age collapse, when everything Mediterranean north of Egypt went to Hell. 400 years to make up anything you please to fill the void with. Good enough for Virgil......

Heck, the 90's feel like Ancient History at this point...
Lucy Lawless still looks great though. Like a fine wine.

I made some progress today on this build. All the grip/hilt fittings are done, but they are in a super rough shape. I'm gluing all the pieces together tomorrow with a quick setting epoxy and then sanding my little heart out. From there, I have a TON of cosmetic things I have to deal with. Among the cosmetic jobs to do, I am etching the blade on both sides with my intertwined serpent design. I got an artist on Fiverr to make a vector file for me, and a stencil making company has produced the vinyl stencils for me. This will probably be the final step in this build. The design is below.

I just ran across this thread! This looks like a particular blade I am quite familiar with. I didn't know you were inspired by and going for a Xena look for this beauty! Awesome. I use to love Xena, so am honored to have been part of this project! : )

I'm planning on finishing off the bulk of the work on this bad boy this weekend, so stay tuned!

Update: All the wood has been sanded smooth and two coats of a dye stain have been applied. I also burned the wood a little bit. The photo below shows what it would look like with the abalone shells set in, but I haven't done that yet. Tomorrow, I will finish the grip with oil, set the shells in, polish the brass, and etch the snake pattern into the blade. Once that's done, it's all finished.

That's beauitful. I never watched Xena growing up, but I want that sword anyway. I love both the construction and the execution. The embellishments are quite nice as well. I can't believe I've ever seen this thread

I like everything about this except the blade, now you put that Jody Samson blade you got with this hilt and its perfection.

I have similar plans for that one. I'm pleased how this one turned out. It's not the blade I wanted, but I enjoy it. It actually feels nice in the hand, which may not be evident by photos.

I had some natural light in the kitchen today. So I thought I would take new photos. You can see all the little flaws and mistakes I made during the build: cracks in the wood, a cracked cabochon, asymmetry, etc... I wanted this sword to look OLD and WEATHERED. So when I made a mistake, I didn't bother correcting it. When I set in the red cabochon, it cracked. Instead of replacing it, I took the broken pieces and put it back together. It looks like someone dropped it or something. Remember, in my lore, this isn't Xena's true sword. This is an ancestral sword she took, used to defend her homeland, and then left it behind. The next project I am starting, will be her actual hero sword. Big shout out to forum member Lionhardt, who helped me polish this blade when I was injured. I put a patina on after his polish job was complete.

Fantastic!!!! Well done sir! Thank you! I'll replace the cracked red cabchon at some point, and I'll be making a scabbard this spring. This was a lot of fun, but I'm glad it's (mostly) over.
