As I've said on discord, great looking stuff Nerd!
Also Gunnar pls, butted mail
Click on the picture of the original helmet. One remaining ring, looks like butted mail to me. But what do you want for $135. Unfortunately very little Viking mail has been found to know for sure that they didn't sometimes butt their mail.

Thanks guys! I love it! Here is the “civilian” kit. I need to have the cloak modified to my size but I love it!

Are you with a reenactment group or just doing it for fun ? Unfortunately no Viking reenactment groups anywhere near me. I would even consider building a small Viking river boat if there was.

Nothing wrong with that. Makes a good Renfaire or Halloween costume too.

Unfortunately every little Viking mail has been found to know for sure that they didn't sometimes butt their mail. It does, which makes sense, what you would sometimes get is part butted part riveted, in which case just like on the found helmet it makes sense for the row that fastens to the helmet to be butted, easier to take on / off to maintain.
Not that this is the only issue with the helmet you linked, if I'm not wrong the liner is also glued to the helmet isn't it? Proportions are also very wrong, but it is cheap indian/pakistani armor so you get what you pay for.
Better to save up and get better stuff, I say, especially for armor, you simply can not get good and accurate cheap armor, unlike swords where you can get a good deal now and then.

So I guess now you're going to tell me they didn't have glue back then. It looks like Nerdthenord is just getting started so he probably doesn't want to spend $500- $1000 on a helmet. I wouldn't, would rather use that money for a sword or two. The one I have is just a topper for my Viking sword display. Other than trying it on when I first got it it will probably just sit there. Unless I go on raids or get buried with it.

Oh they definitely did, did they glue their liners to their helmets when they could use needle and thread? would be incredibly unlikely, considering how valuable leather and skin was back then I doubt it was even used for lining a helmet, and definitely not glued to steel. And for reference the Gjermundbu mail shirt is mixed butted and round riveted with approx. 8mm I believe, without seeing it or having a better picture of it the ring that is left on the helmet may be either butted or riveted, impossible to see from the picture but its very likely it was of the same type, mail is either half/half (Approximately) or fully riveted, fully butted mail is just not protective. That said yes, Nerd and me talk almost every day on discord and he is just getting started, he picked the clothing well and sadly the helmet didn't work out, I'm just keeping him and possibly others from buying a barely better helmet, his at least has riveted mail (Albeit flat I think) but obvious issues elsewhere. Also I like your display wall, awesome way of showing off the collection

Yeah, I’m far more active on the discord than the forum these days. I’m going to get a custom helmet eventually for this kit.

Yeah, my budget isn’t the greatest and won’t be for a long while, and I spent more on this than I planned, but it’s an awesome starter kit minus the helmet which just doesn’t work.

Bah, the helmet isn't sooo bad! Why do I know the padded coif thing? And I have a head like a water melon!

This is exactly what I'm gonna go for when I'm able to afford it. How's it feel to wear

Your pic with the mail and helmet is spot-on. As others have said though, the helmet is a bit off-putting. That style of helm should be much closer fitting and the oculars much smaller. Finding a proper Viking 'cat-eye' helmet can be an ordeal. You might look at some of the Viking helmets from Wulflund...in the CZ, I believe. Some great stuff there. www.wulflund.comI’ve looked at them, but Strigoil linked me a custom maker a while back that offered a darn good price for a completely battle ready custom helmet of the type that’s a bit more accurate to my chosen era, circa 700-800 AD. It’s basically a solid metal nasal helm with cheek guards and mail aventail, no ocular.

Unfortunately my time teaching others comes to an end Tuesday, but rest assured there is more Viking stuff on the way for me! The student turned teacher is becoming a student yet again, hopefully with the end result of becoming a true master.

So how OCD are you on accuracy? The kit looks great, my only feedback is look at period belts and pouches. The belt you're using is too wide, and the pouch is late medieval/fantasy. Though there is little evidence for belts and pouches past some Birka finds, which aren't practical for wearing a sword. I use a thin baldric when I drag a sword around for comfort.
But great kit! Are you tucking the end of the winnegas in or are you using hooks?

I’m not gonna be obsessive over accuracy, but I’m planning on using this as a base for an 8th Century Norwegian Huskarl kit. Use my sword that’s on the way, and get a seax, spear, shield, and late migration period helmet.
