Greetings all! Wow... my first time starting a thread *takes a deep breath* Being a community that loves functional swords and nerdy movies... I was just wondering if anyone else here has pre-ordered this sword by Indy Magnoli? I have been onboard with this project since it started Jan 2014 - and surprised I haven't seen it pop up on this forum yet lol It's supposed to be a screen accurate replica of Guthwine, the sword of Eomer, from the LOTR movies. Unlike the UC replicas, this sword will feature: - Tempered carbon steel blade. - Full tang & peened. - Leather over wood handle. - Matching scabbard and wall plaque. Just curious if anyone else has either pre-ordered one or had any thoughts on it? www.magnoliprops.com/guthwine-sword-pre-order-other-props-p-609.html

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

To be honest, I find it hard to believe that the sword comes with a decorative scabbard and being functional with that price. I guess those fittings are cast metal. It might be a rat-tail tang with screw on pommel.

I always get really nervous when a manufacturer or retailer just says "metal", instead of steel or iron or bronze or what-have-you, because IME most of the time it'll turn out to mean some kind of cheap and light but brittle as heck zinc alloy (AKA white metal, pot metal etc). It may or may not be so in this case, but if they won't specify there's no way to know and I can't help but get suspicious about why they wouldn't specify, you know?

The pre-order link says nothing about it being carbon steel, full tang or being peened.
I would think that to be important facts needed to attract potential buyers.
The fact that there is no definitive shipping time also is an issue in my mind. No disclaimer about you won't be charged until we ship. All in all even if I wanted it these factors alone would make it a no deal for me.

Yeah.... unfortunately there isn't much info on the sales page. This project is headed by a custom prop replica maker, so the majority of the information is on prop replica forums (RPF, Flame of Udun, UCForums). Between those forums, and direct email conversations with Indy, is where I obtained the above information - tempered carbon steel blade, full tang, peened, etc. Sadly, this project was originally supposed to have antique brass hilt furniture - but that has changed to antique plated brass (or bronze) over a metal alloy. I asked if it were possible to have a smaller run of solid metal / brass furniture - but no Also to be noted - the picture on the sales page was the first completed prototype. The current version will be quite different - as they remade the molds in order to incorporate grooves into the scabbard, and to make the blade fullers more screen accurate (longer and wider). The second prototype should be ready in the next 2-3 weeks. Which is also why there's no expected shipping dates - as it has changed a LOT in the past 5 years lol. I hope that answers some of the questions / concerns Either way - I've always been a big fan of Eomer, and Guthwine is probably my favourite sword from the Trilogy. So cannot wait to have a more realistic version of it!

According to an email I received earlier from Magnoli Props, the sword blade is “tempered carbon steel”, but the “hilt and pommel are made from a zinc alloy”. They also stated production is going a little slower than expected, but pre-ordered swords will ship out early next year. Hope that helps clear things up.

Hopefully it isn't too much longer now. I believe that everything is cast / ready. They are just redoing the antique finishing on the hilt and scabbard parts. Home Stretch

Pretty cool! I am not a huge fan off rohirrim blades but it isn’t a bad replica!

For anyone still interested in this project - the latest important updates from the RPF Forums are:
- Blades are currently being polished. - The tangs are peened (he posted a picture). - The hilt fittings are Brass. - Sword prototype complete, now they're working on final touches for the scabbard and display plaque.

Thanks for the clarification though. I was just going by his last post July 28th (below). I guess he needs to edit that... I remember it was supposed to be Brass, then switched to Zinc Alloy, but then i was hoping he switched back again. I've been bugging him for years to make a separate set of swords with Brass or Bronze fittings lol. I think that's the ONE thing this version needs to make it an awesome sword.

[/quote] I agree... it would definitely be a much better sword with either brass or bronze fittings, and would be a step beyond a “reproduction” piece like most companies like Kit Rae, UC, etc.
