So, I would like to share that I recently appeared on my boyfriend's podcast, The Weekly Cooldown, which recaps the week's news in video games. My contribution is commentary and analysis of the upcoming Half-Life: Alyx. I have been a huge fan of this series from the beginning. I am very shy and embarrassed for others to hear me speak, but I promoted this forum at the end of the podcast. So it was brought to my attention that I ought to promote the podcast. So, for what it's worth, here it is. It is Episode 72.

Look, when HL came out way back in 1998 it was way too much for my machine. I had to upgrade. Likewise with the next one. HL has never been about just continuing a saga. Valve sees it as a means of pushing the technology to the limit. So VR makes sense from that perspective.

I'm still listening to the podcast, but I have to admit that at this point I'm happy with crumbs. This is an era when once-awesome franchises are reduced to mobile or pachinko. Now, whether or not VR in 2020 is really up to its long-time promise is an open question. It certainly can scare the crap out of you. But also make you have headaches and it costs a bunch. As noted in the podcast, it may be that the huge delay in 3 has been the result of uncertainty about VR's potential.

I am pleased with most of what I have seen and I am optimistic. I think you are right that Valve is driven by pushing tech.
